Trimming a Coat

I have a medium-sized mixed breed. He has a very husky-like coat, and I was wondering of any dangers in trimming it for the summer?

Re: Trimming a Coat

there are loads on this site re clipping a coat for the summer

i personaly dont as its there to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter it also protects against sun burn which leads to sunstrock with can then lead to death if not cought fast enough

also some coats wont grow back the same and u will end up with a fluff ball but look about on here theres lots of info about

xx

I agree the type of coat you describe deffinately shouldn't be clipped, simply upkeep with brushing,I have known a few dogs whos coat doesn't grow back anymore. contrary to what some may think shaving a dogs hair off doesn't keep them cool for the summer. The coat protects them, a dog cools down by panting, and looses heat in their pads and groin. Hope that helps.

Definitely don't shave a husky; their coats almost always come in very scraggly looking.

Once spring comes, make it a point to get him bathed every couple of weeks in order to help encourage that shedding coat to come out nicely; once he starts to shed start getting him bathed and thoroughly brushed out with good shedding tools.

Re: Trimming a Coat

I agree to all the above HOWEVER... for people who have Huskys just as pets you can shave off the underbelly. I do this for a few people in the summertime as it helps keep the dog cooler because the dogs belly and genitalia are touching ground so if they lay on cool concrete or dust it helps keep them cool and comfortable. Keep up with the daily brushing for the rest of the body however as you will still get shedding. The best thing about doing the underbelly only is it will keep the most of his coat in good, manegable condition and it can't be seen when the dog is standing (however it will be visible when he is laying down). I wouldn't reccomend it for everyone but for the average pet its certainly an option.
