Arrow When should you begin training your puppy

I've read you shouldn't start until they're at least 6 months old but I read a thread that a 2 mo old already knew 3 commands.I've read if you star any earlier it'll just confuse them. Can it be done? I have a 3 mo old Chi/terrior mix. Does the breed make any diffrence?

You should start training as soon as you bring you them home

Basic commands like sit, are used all the time. Both of my guys had sit, down, stay (not very solid) and come pretty down pat by the age of three months. Of course with sits and downs I was still luring them with a treat though, and comes were light happy and fun!

They say that intense training shouldn't begin until six months, but basic commands can be worked on from the start. Take it/Leave it, drop it, enough, are things that are detrimental to your LIFE and your puppies.

As for the breed, I don't know Chi's sorry

Ah thanks I thought you shouldn't try anything except "no" until 6mo. Thanks for the input.

Good training schools will usually have a "puppy" class, which will focus on basic commands, manners, and socialization. These classes typically are for pups 10 - 16 weeks old, and a certain level of vaccination is required. I would call a few schools in your area to find out about the training methods they use, and what age, and requirements they will need for your pup. Early training and socialization is highly recommended. Let us know what you find.

The day you bring him home!! Start with NILIF (google for information) this is training at its best and its easy. Your not training obdience you are training respect. Remember that a darling little puppy that greats you at the door and jumps all over you happily kissing you as you pick him up seems so.. cute. But in 5 months from now, you will be dealing with a behavior issue. Your now bigger and not so cute puppy will be jumping and demanding attention that you will want to stop. So by appling some techiniques now making you a benevelant leader will lead a well behaved puppy. Positive rules are necessary. Start immeidiatly with bite inabitition and enroll in a puupy kindergarten class for socialization and teaching your puppy some basic obdience.

I agree with the other posters. I began training Natalie as soon as I brought her home. Besides, if a dog can learn what "no" means prior to 6 months of age I'm sure they won't have any trouble learning what "yes" means.
