greeting politely...training snaffu LOL

OK, so we've been working with our little Ella (9 wks.) on not jumping on our legs to greet us when she's excited and she's picked right up on sitting right in front of you and waiting to be acknowledged. It literally took about 2, 5min. sessions of ignoring when she jumped and rewarding when she sat for her to understand what we wanted. So all the rest of today she's been following me around the house or yard and sitting right in front of me. I sometimes use a treat as a reward, sometimes just verbal praise. Well I was just in the kitchen trying to make dinner and she kept parking herself right in front of my feet sitting and giving me the eyes (you know the ones LOL) I did praise her the first couple times but was a bit distracted with dinner prep. Out of nowhere a very loud attention grabbing bark came from in front of my feet followed by a big sigh and she lay right over the tops of my toes. Guess she was looking for some undivided attention huh??

I would ignore the behavior when it is not asked for or used in the wrong context. She'll soon learn where it's appropriate and where it's useless (to get a treat). Just make sure you treat her when she is using it correctly and ignore it when it's not. You can also teach her to go lay down in a neutral area when you are busy making dinner, etc., so she won't be underfoot. Asking for another behavior is a great way to divert them.
