Cool managing jussell pups

i have always owned lap dogs,so this is a new experience for me. I rescuced my dog Jack from a shelter. but he is a whirlwind of activity, does not get along with other dog and 2 cats. He is male but nuetered. I have made some progress in housetraining and try to follow Ceaser Milan faithfuly, but frankly find it hard to maintain order. Any suggestion? Help, I love this dog but he is driving my family crazy!

Re: managing jussell pups

My first question would be: How much exercise (both physical and mental stimulation) does he get?

Re: managing jussell pups

Jack russells are one of the most frequent breeds we see as strays at our shelter. They are fantastic escape artists and have endless energy. They will find a way to use that energy if you don't provide some direction.

I would suggets that you get the JRT into some group obedience classes. And don't stop iwth just one 6-week session. JRT's need constant stimulation. They are also great at agility because of the high energy level.

JRT's are definitely not for everyone. And if you intend to keep this dog you are going to have to put a lot of time and expend a lot of energy to keep him busy.

Also thought I'd add that JRTs are terriers in all means possible; they love to dig, bark, and chase things. They are so NOT a lap dog, even if they are small.
Being terriers, they don't always get along with other dogs or small animals. There are three JRTs that frequently board where I work at (named Jack, Russel, and Terrie). They come from the same family, but Jack and Russel cannot be anywhere near each other or they try to kill one another.
JRTs were bred to hunt, so critters like cats and rodent will be persude with a passion unless they are raised with them; and even then they may not be safe.

I would suggest taking LONG walks, followed by lots of play sessions and training to help get his energy out. And as Briteday said, going to obedience classes and maybe getting into a doggy sport would help.

The Jack Russell Terrorist. LOL!!!! J/K

You have to redirect his attention constantly and give him a job to do. JRT's need to be kept busy or they tend to become bored and when they do they find their own entertainment.

Exercise and more exercise. A tired dog is a happy dog and equals very happy owner.

I would suggest to you to find a flyball club or agilty club and enroll. JRT's are fast little guys/gals and love these types of activities. You will be happy and so will he.

Best of luck and thanks so much for rescuing your JRT.
