| Re: need help to housetrain my yorkie Well, first of all, you need to keep in mind that dogs are not housetrained overnight. My first puppy wasn't housetrained until she was five months old. Also, Yorkies have small bladders, therefore need to be taken out over and over again. Do you have a male or female? Is s/he altered? How old is s/he?
What you should try is constantly taking him out. If he doesn't have a chance to go potty in the house, then he will eventually like going only on grass. Dogs like to have the same ground underneath them every time they go. So, if he gets used to going on the carpet, that will be the only place he will ever want to go. Just get him used to going on grass. Take him out as soon as he wakes up, after a meal, after a play time, nap time, etc...Take him out maybe every forty-five minutes to an hour.
If you ever catch him in the act (Which you should, because if he is not in your sight, he should be in a crate) clap your hands, pick him up quick, do whatever you have to to get him to stop. Then hurry and take him outside. As soon as he goes outside, love him up. Say GOOD BOY!! I LOVE YOU BOY! YOU"RE A CUTY!!! Actually, it doesn't really matter WHAT you say, just say it very animated. Also, a rolled up newspaper is a good tool for housetraining. If you ever are walking through the house and come upon a pile of poop that the pup left when you weren't looking, hit yourself over the head with the newspaper while saying, "I will watch my puppy...I will supervise him constantly!" Then proceed to clean up the mess. |

| Re: need help to housetrain my yorkie It helped for us to give a tiny piece of "milk bone" every time our puppy "pottied" where she was suppose to. She would watch our hands to see if we were reaching for the treat when she would go potty. After a few weeks of this we "weaned" her off the treats and did more showering of praises. It worked best first with food because she loves to eat! It didn't matter how small the piece was as long as she was rewarded. |

| Re: need help to housetrain my yorkie Yorkies! The one that I had was a nightmare to train and when I thought I had it done I would walk into a room only step in poop. All I can say is that dog was the hardest dog I have ever trained in my life. What are you doing now to train it and do you use a crate? |

| Re: need help to housetrain my yorkie Wow! Am I ever greatful that there is someone else having a hard time with housebreaking! I got my Yorkie a week ago, and he is just over 2 1/2 months old. Jaylie is right-it doesn't happen overnight, and that is what I keep telling myself to keep my sanity!! I am keeping his "spot" with newspapers next to our sliding glass door, where it is quick to go out, in case he starts to get that look and starts sniffing everywhere. When this happens I say,"go potty", and I bring him to the paper and stay with him, talking gental and after he goes, I give him a piece of a treat and praise him with great enthusiasm. I also take him outside each time he wakes up from a nap, and say, "go potty", and again more praise.. He is kept in a soft sided portable crate at night and before bed I take him out for the final time and go through the routine, and then in the morning (usually 4-4:30 am-ugh!) I put him on the paper by the door and tell him potty, and he does, and gets a treat and great praise. The only problem is he is ready to be up for the day at this point..I feel like a new mommy, but I keep telling myself to be consistant and soon he will be trained. Please let me know what works for you, best of luck! |

| Re: need help to housetrain my yorkie We had a hard time with one of our dachshunds. She just didn't get it. She was even crate trained. We finally found this stuff at petsmart (can't remember the name), it was years ago. We thoroughly cleaned our carpet on the soiled areas with it, and she stopped going there. It's hard when you have house dogs I think.
