Going to the bathroom outside..

My dog Winston is 8 months old. He knows how to go on the wee wee pads in the bathroom. When we go on walks outside he also knows how to pee out there but he has never pooped. He only poos 2 times a day, usually in the morning and between 12-3. Does anyone have any ideas on how i can train him to poo outside? Also, how can i teach him to beg or show me that he has to go outside??

My only thought is to start collecting his poops and bring them to a spot outside so he knows he can poop out there and feel comfortable doing so because of the smell.

good luck! What a cutie! (if that's the one in your avatar)

Re: Going to the bathroom outside..

To get Riley to tell me when he wanted to poo/pee I trained him to use a bell that we hung from the door. We always use the same door to take him outside. We initially had "us" housebroken - in otherwords we knew when to take him out at the right times - but he never gave us any signal to go out. Some dogs will. He likes to follow me around so I would go outside and my DD would stay inside and taught him with treats to ring the bell. If he rang the bell he got to come outside with me. It didn't take long for him to catch on. He will sometimes ring the bell just to go outside to play but he always rings if he needs to go. It's been wonderful. Oh, and Riley looks like a white version of Winston and is 6 months old.

I trained my puppy to use the bell also. We always use one door for his outside duties and I put a little peanut butter on the bell to get him to move it. Once it rang, I opened the door. We did this several times a day until he didn't need the peanut butter anymore. EVEN now, if we are going out and he wants to go with us, we make him ring the bell before opening the door. It seems to be working great.

Re: Going to the bathroom outside..

My 5 month pup has really improved her toilet training the past week. She's not had an accident in the house for days and hasn't pooped in the house for months. But she isn't too good at indicating when she needs to go! Sometimes she will go to the door, but more often an not she doesn't. I did wonder about trying to train her with a bell!

Re: Going to the bathroom outside..

I am in the process of teaching my dog to ring the bell. I have been doing it for about a month and he is finally "getting it". not always but maybe 60% of the time. All I did was literally every single time we went out "ring the bell". thousands and thousands of times. It did take this long for him to even begin to get it. for the first few weeks it seemed totally pointless and I almost gave up but now I am glad I didn't.
repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition.
