Where to put the crate?

During the day of course the crate will be placed inside my 8 week old pup's x-pen for her while we are not home. But I am wondering about at night. Some people have said to bring it into the bedroom so that you can provide some company/comfort for the pup and also so you can hear if they wake at night and need to go potty. But others have said that the crate should be left in the same spot all the time so they get into the routine and wont learn that they "need" to be in the bedroom and/or with someone to sleep.

What do you think?

Re: Where to put the crate?

I don't think the dog has the presence of mind to know if you have one crate or more....so I don't think it would hurt to move it to the bedroom for the night. I usually keep our puppies in the bedroom at night for the reasons you stated. When they are reliably sleeping thru the night I have been known to move them to the other end of the house if they snore or chase rabbits in their sleep!

Re: Where to put the crate?

I'm not sure what is best, but I've kept the crate in the same place-the computer room off of the kitchen.
She is 6 months now and we brought her home at 11 weeks. There were only a couple of nights when she cried during the night, and I heard her from upstairs.
We used a night-light for her and kept the radio on for the first few weeks. I don't know if it helped her, but I felt better thinking that she wasn't in the dark and that the music soothed her.
I'm just lazy and didn't want to lug the crate up and down. It worked fine for us....good luck!

Re: Where to put the crate?

We have all 3 of our dog's crates in our bedroom. Doesn't leave much room for my husband and I, but since I am a worry wart, it gave me peace of mind to be able to keep my ears and eyes on them at night. And we don't move the crates at all, so if the dogs get crated at all during the day, it's up to the bedroom they go.

Re: Where to put the crate?

Riley is 6 months old. We put his crate on a piano dolly and move it as necessary. Now that he's pretty much potty trained we put it in the dining/kitchen area during the day when we are gone (the area is gated off). At night we roll the crate into the living room when we are in there(so he can lie down if he wants) and when it's time to go to bed we tell him it's bed time and he goes into the crate and we roll him into our room. But then I have a one story home.

Re: Where to put the crate?

Ally is 4 months and we have a crate in the main room downstairs and then also in the bedroom. Because we also work during the day and she only sees us at lunch for a quick walk I think it's better to be with her at night. Works good for us, the only problem is we had to buy another crate. It's garage sale season though and great places to look for crates... Good luck!

Re: Where to put the crate?

We moved Coco's crate up and down stairs so she could be in the bedroom with us until she was four months old. It was heavy to carry but we never got round to looking for a second crate. I liked having her close at night in the early weeks.

I guess it won't be so bad with a little crate for Corona, but you could look into getting a second crate if it's a bother. It might also be useful to have a second crate for her in the car, if you use a car.

Re: Where to put the crate?

Thanks all! I tried putting the crate in my room the first night and that was a nightmare! So last night I left her in her x-pen in the living room and we all got some sleep! So for now, I think that's where she'll stay.

Re: Where to put the crate?

Because she's not used to your room maybe she needs a few nights to get used the routine of sleeping in a different area? It seems she'd enjoy it more being near you.. But I understand wanting some sleep.

Re: Where to put the crate?

She is doing well with her crate in her x-pen. She usually falls asleep on someone's lap in the late evening, and then we transfer her into the crate and she is okay there until early morning (4 or 5am). It seems to be the best option as it also eliminates us having to get up when she needs to go pee!
