| how do I potty train this thing? Hi, me again *nerotic basset hound*
anyway, hes not any better. well ok alittle, if he thinks I'm not in the room he will explore. but as soon as he sees me he runs around in circles trying to find a place to hide *he broke my tv when he tried to hide under the stand it was on. . .I didnt yell at him but it was close*
but todays question is, how do I potty train a dog who hyperventaltes when I look at him? though I do take it as a good sign that he is eating since he can poop on my white carpet, its still a white carpet *wasnt my idea its a rental* I still have to drag him outside, but I've never seen him do anything out there but sniff and hide under leaves.
Everyone tells me to just give him time and in a few months I'll have a dog, and I'm not going to just give up on him, but I Dont want to loose my safty deposit because the carpets need replaced.
any advise?
thanks, Debra |

| Re: how do I potty train this thing? Hey! I Recently Got A Rescue Pup (8mo Puggle) Love Him! Scared To Death Of Us! WE LOST HIM AFTER 3HOURS BECAUSE A NEIGHBOR DOG BARKED AND HE MANAGED TO SLIP HIS COLLER!WE FOUND HIM 2 DAYS LATER AND WE HAD TO GET THE HELP OF ANIMAL CONTROL(WHOM DID NOT CATCH HIM).IT TOOK US 12 HRS TO CATCH HIM.HE Cowers In Fear Alot! But One Thing Conquered(more Or Less) Is Potty Training. With Some Additional Help From The Children And A Lot Of Devotion. We Started By Buying Some Treats He Really Loves(in Our Case It Was Beggin' Strips) Coupled With Hours Of Devoted Sitting On The Porch.the Thing We Did Know Is We Had To Catch Him Going Outside.i Think Someone Yelled At Him Long After The Fact And He Was Soo Confused That He Thought Going At All Was Bad!!! He Only Went When He Assumed We Were Not Looking. Usually Somewhere Inside!! We Barred Him From All Rooms But The Living Room And Dining Room.(watching Closely)then We Tied Him Out Every Hour Like One Of The Kids(still Today He Won't Potty On A Leash We Are Holding)and Waited. We Sat And Did Something Else. My Daughter Would Play Gameboy, I Played Tetris On My Cell Phone, My Husband Would Make Phone Calls, Etc. And Wait. The Whole First Day We Sat With No Luck And An Hour Wasted Every Time. Only To Have Him Potty Inside. Discouraged We Crated Him And Went To Bed. He "went" In His Crate.(BUT ONLY ONCE) HE NEVER POTTIED IN HIS CRATE AFTER THAT DAY) But That Morning He Went Outside! Horray! We Praised Him Outside And Immediatly Offered Him A Treat! (that He Ran From Tail Between The Legs!)my Children Did Most Of The Indoor Praising And The Kids Got Him To Treats Out Of Their Hand!by Day Three He Was Doing Most Potty Trips Outside He Still Doesen't Go To The Door But He Doesn't Go Inside Nearly As Often Either!! So All In All It Was A Sucess! HE STILL RUNS WHEN WE GO NEAR HIM BUT HE FOUND A PLACE AT THE END OF THE COUCH AND WHEN HE IS THERE WE CAN APPROACH HIM! GOOD LUCK AND KEEP UP THE GREAT EFFORT!!!!!!!!!

| Re: how do I potty train this thing? Supervision, supervision, supervision! Brush up on how to housetrain, and contain your dog in one area of the house, or keep him in his crate if you can't supervise him. He should not have freedom of the house until he's earned it. From your posts, I'd say you could use some professional help.
In the meantime, help make your dog feel more secure by establishing a daily routine with some structure. Dogs, just like children, thrive on structure and routine. It helps them relax, because they know what's coming.
When you approach your dog, get down to his level (i.e., on one knee), and gently tap your leg or the floor and call him in a happy voice. Have a yummy treat for him. When you enter the room he's in, move slowly, and turn to the side rather than facing him head on. Yawn (yes, I do mean that!), and avoid eye contact. If he's getting "hyper," turn your back to him and be still. These are all calming signals that dogs use with each other, and your dog will understand them, and feel less threatened.
Work on your relationship. Walk your dog, hand feed him his meals, let him sleep with a teeshirt you've worn, so your scent is with him even when he sleeps. Sit quietly with him beside you, and give him yummy treats (Natural Balance Food Rolls are like doggie heroin to most dogs!). Most of all, be patient with him, and spend time with him. Your investment will be worth it. |

| Re: how do I potty train this thing? Without knowing how bad the dog reacts to you I'm not certain my if my advice will work.
Both of my dogs had fears when I got them. One of my dogs was afraid of fences. Every time we would go for a walk he would freak when we passed a fence. Well, I made a decision to cure him of the fear. We walked past every fence we could after I tired him out and he soon realized that fences aren't scary.
I used the same techique to cure my other dog of being afraid of plastic garbage cans.
Exercise your dog until its tired and keep it next to you. The anxiety level will hopefully go down quickly. However, fear problems can be tough to resolve.
I've never dealt with a dog that was afraid of me so I would have to play it by ear and see what the dog responds best to. This may be a case where a professional is the best answer to your problem. I am by no means a professional trainer, but have grown up around local show breeders and know how to deal with a variety of dog behavior issues. Fearful dogs are the hardest to work with by far. |

| Re: how do I potty train this thing? I still cant get him to walk, I still have to drag him everywhere.
I desided to leave him alone where hes currently holed up *becaue I cant get a good grip on him and I dont want to hurt him*, he hasnt moved a muscle in over 15 hours
hes already lost weight since I brought him home 7 days ago. I put several treats around him at 330 they are all still there.
I'm going to call some professioanls and see how much they cost. . . which is a big factor right now |

| Re: how do I potty train this thing? I don't mean to sound rude but when you decided to get a dog did you do any research? I do commend you for getting a rescue but do you know what you got yourself into getting a 10 month old Basset?
I too recommend you get a behavourist as soon as possible.
And like another poster said rather than dragging the dog around sit on the floor, have some treats, gentle talk and entice him to follow. Be patient and in time it wl be fine. |

I figure one day he will try it too either that or we will have to get him one of those doggie strollers. He is not scared in the house or yard or even of any people just going for a walk he just wont. |
