List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

I don't know what tricks I should teach Nia. I have no imagination and can't think of anything good so I want to hear all yours! Maybe I'll find one I like!

Currently Nia knows:
- sit
- down
- up
- beg (sitting straight up with front paws in the air)
- back (back up)
- turn
- shake hands
- touch
- circle (around me)
- roll over
- give me a kiss
- scratch my head
- jump over obstacles

got any amusing/fun tricks for me?

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

That's a pretty long list

Cadence knows:
- sit
- lie down
- stay
- paw
- circle
- stand up
- come

Interesting ones I've taught Cadence that you might wanna teach Nia:
- crawl (start with "lie down" or "down". This was easy for me because my hand signal for Cadence involves me putting my fist on the ground with a treat inside. Then I slowly move my hand away from him and say "crawl!" as he crawls to get it. In the beginning he kept lifting his butt, so I would say, wrong! and start again till he got it.)

- which one? (put a treat in one of your hands and ball them up. Put both fists in front and let the dog sniff. Once they figure out which hand has the treat, wait till she paws on the hand, then say good! and feed the treat)

Commands that I'm working on:
- stretch (aka Bow). This one's been taking a while, sigh.
- rollover. He HATES HATES being rolled over. I've been trying this one for months now.
- beg. He still doesn't get it. Lol.

Some I've seen that are cool:
- Bang! (Play Dead) My friend's dog does this really, really well... but I haven't the slightest idea how I'm gonna teach Cadence to lie on his back and not move.

- wipe your face. (dog uses paw to "wipe" its face, lol)

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Oh yeah Nia HATES rolling over too! It took me the longest time to get her to do it. She hates being flipped on her back and if I'm pushing her by hand or something she won't budge. And luring didn't work either, she won't turn beyond her neck can and won't roll to get whatever I'm luring with.

I tried crawl once but she always gets up to get the ball. Nia doesn't care about treats and can't learn tricks very well with them so I have to use throwing a ball as the reward. She won't crawl towards the ball, she'll just get up. I can't even get her to crawl one step lol. If I could then I can shape it one step at a time.

She also shuts down really easily, if I ask for her to do something 6-7 times and she still hasn't got it right, she'll basically shut down and run away without wanting to do it. And then that trick will be ruined, every time I ask for that again, she'll look scared and run away.

Nia knows find it but I don't consider it a trick, she just loves to find the ball around the house hahah!

I think I could teach bow but she doesn't do it very much so I'll have to capture it.

I might try the wipe face one, I'm going to call it "are you shy?"

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Oh, damn.. it's so much harder to teach a dog who doesn't care for treats! Lol. Guess you won't be able to teach "which one" as well haha.

Yeah, Cadence does the shutting down thing too.. only.. he just gives up trying to do what I'm teaching him to and just goes back to doing all the tricks he already knows in hopes that I'll feed him the treat haha.

Bow is a hard one, I feel. Cadence does it A WHOLE LOT. Every single time he wakes up he stretches at least 5 times. Every time he does it, I mark it by saying "stretch!" but he doesn't pay attention, I think. He's pretty bad with verbal commands, so I might have to come up with a visual cue for it.. although I'm really running out of them lol. There's only so many cues you can do with your hands!

Yes, you should try are you shy, and let me know if she gets it My friend also taught her dog "shake your head". It's ADORABLE! Her dog shakes his head a couple of times real quick. I asked her how she did it, and she said she just blew in one of his ears and he kept shaking his head... and she marked that behaviour. So awesome. When I tried blowing in Cadence's ear, he just stared at me like.. "what the heck are you doing??? " lol.

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Which one is find it in my house Even if I don't teach it she's going to be looking for the ball anyways LOL. She LOVES balls, I have at least 15 of them in my house for her.

I think the shy one is pretty easy. Probably only take about 2 days to teach it.

Nia does shake her ears and head when I blow into her ears but she doesn't seem very happy about that. And I'm not sure if I want her shaking her head like crazy if she wants a ball or a treat LOL.

I don't know, Nia loves treats when other dogs are eating it but she has no interest in working for it even though if I move a treat bag she does come running over. To her it's like oh I want the thing that tastes nice, but what? I have to do something for it? No way forget it. If it's a trick she knows she'll do it but she doesn't want to learn for it.

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Pebbles knows:

sit
down
stand up
sit pretty (begging)
turn around (spins right or left depending on the hand signal)
high five
down low
gim'me 10 (high 5 both paws)
shake
sneak (army crawl)
roll over
dance
hop (she hops on her back legs)
stick 'em up (think old western cowboy movie)
bang (play dead)

We're working on:
sneeze (our first Aussie Zoey would sneeze on command, Pebs been doing this a lot. She'll sneeze and DH/I laugh so she does it again. I don't think it'll take long to capture)
'dirty b@sterd' aka: embarrassed (paw over her nose) (long story behind this one but it was a joke between my housemates and I to call each other dirty b's)
praying (bowing on a chair or couch or whatever and putting her face between her paws)

Lucidity: the first thing your going to have to do to teach 'bang' is teach him to roll over. When I taught Pebs I used baby steps & a clicker, which IMO is the fastest way to teach it. First roll over, then I would 'block' her with my leg when she rolled over (sitting on the floor) and stop her when she was on her back, once she was comfortable with being stopped I gradually lengthened the time between the trick and the click. If she rolled over all the way or got up too fast no click, no treat. Then I added the cue and lengthened the 'wait' at the end of the trick and now (when she's being good) she won't end the trick until I say ok. The important thing is once he starts to 'get it' DO NOT click if there is any movement. The only way he gets what he wants is to be absolutely still. I made this mistake with Pebs and it took me a while to 'reteach' her not to move.

She gets VERY dramatic now, it's her favorite trick, and will stand up and completely fall over onto her side and flip to her back when I 'shoot' her after shes been 'stuck up'. It's so cute! One of these days I'm going to have to try and get a video uploaded.

down
stay
look (watch me)

paw, and other paw
High five
Jump (he can jump really high)
sneak- crawl
go to bed
find the kitty ( this one has been a life saver when one of our cats makes it out the front door)
sit pretty
where's cerbie? you stand with your legs apart and we walks through them from behind you and looks up and grins at you. Hilarious.
close the back door

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Zoey is better at all of them than Maggie u_u

Paw
Other paw
Lay Down
Sit
Up (sit pretty)
Up-Up (stand up and walk forward on two legs)
Roll over
Bang (play dead)
Spin
Hold it (balance a treat on your nose/paw/head)
Leave it
Where's Daddy? (Find my husband)
Find it (find the toy or treat)
Stay
Drop it
Out (leave the room)
Get down (Off)

Pointing - I used the clicker to teach Zoey that when I point at something (the couch, the bed) I want her to jump up on it, if I point to a spot on the floor, I want her to sit there. If I point at an object (one of her toys) I want her to pick it up and bring it to me. Sometimes though she gets confused as to what I'm pointing at.. Understandable.

And then she knows phrases that we use like
"What-waz-dat" (Go look out the window)
"Is it Bath time, Zoe?" (Get in the tub)
"Want to get dried off?" (Go sit on the mat in the bathroom and wait to be blow dried and brushed)
"Wannna go?" (Want to go in the car)
"Walk" (Don't ever use this word unless your prepared to go on a walk)
"Do you have to go potty??" (Blank staring means no, standing up on her back legs and saying 'Rrroww Rrrow Rrrow Rrrow' means yes, in Maggie's case yes is just whining at me)
"Are you Hung-ee?" (Are you hungry? Yes and No same as for potty :P)
"Ice" (Don't ever say this word unless you have ice)
"Want to go see Fern?" (Going to look at the guinea pig)

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Chloe isnt that.... educated... lol.
she knows:
sit
shake
go through (goes through my legs)
pick it up
put it down
and a shaky recall... gotta work on that more
.......yep thats it lol.

my Lexi is my "genius" lol. she learns tricks very quickly.
she knows:

sit
stay
wait
leave it
down
crawl
go through (my legs... not so easy now that shes soooo tall!)
pick it up
put it down
shake
bow
"i love you" (she jumps up with her paws on my shoulders and gently kisses me)
off
"gimmie kiss!"
recall
speak/quiet

she also knows a lot of things like when we go to leave somewhere i tell her "go to the car" and i can tell her which car, mine is yellow and my man has a blue truck i can say "the yellow car" and she will go to mine or "daddys truck" and she will go to his. she knows go to bed, go to grandpas, go to grandmas, go to petsmart, etc.

we play a game called "get the booty", she goes and jumps in bed and lays down, and i say "ready?" and she puts her head down and i start walking in really slow wiggling my fingers saying "iiiim gonnna get the boooootttyyyy" and she has to stay perfectly still, if she moves i say "oh no! you lose! restart!!!" and she runs out of the bed then goes back and gets ready again. if i make it to her i go "ooooh i got the booty!!!" and she rolls on her back and gets loved to pieces.... although the one time she got so excited she rolled right off the bed! lol

Kuma's list isn't nearly as long as most of the dogs here, but we're working on it, lol. So far he knows, sit, down, come, off, stay, wait, spin, circle (where he runs around me in a circle), crawl, and "Which one?" (that's where I hide a treat in one of my hands behind my back, and then show them to him and he guesses which hand has the treat and hits it with his paw. Very cute, and people love it, lol.)

Oops I forgot to add what tricks Rocky could do:

Sit
down
touch
leave it
kissy
up ( stands on hind legs )
over ( roll )
off ( he likes to jump for his toys, we're still working on this but he's getting the hang )
wait ( difference between wait/stay - he has to be in a sit for stay, not for wait )
Stay
back ( he has a designated spot on the carpet he has to stay at when I open the door ) get your toy

Re: List your dog's tricks! (for inspiration)

Hope's latest learning successes have been...

"find the..." currently limited to ball and frisbee, that can be hidden anywhere in the entire house.

Go eat your food

Go drink your water

Whattya want? Go show me (So she can show me what she wants instead of sitting in front of me staring and nudging and whining and such like I'm telepathic or something)

Go lay down (meaning go somewhere and lay down and stop bugging me)

And the name Frisbee for the Frisbee.

I've been slacking...

Ohh I forgot already known stuff...

Old stuff...

Go look! (meaning go look at whatever might be outside the window or whatever sound might have gotten her attention)

Sit, down, shake hands, play dead, off, "get the.."(ball or frisbee), bring it here, drop it, pull, let go, up!..

Kinda been trying to catch Kaya up with her since I brought her home.

EDIT: someone asked ages, Hope is a 3-4 year old rescue GSD I have had for not quite a year yet.

Ooh, you guys have a lot!! I forgot to add that Cadence also knows "drop it", "off" and "leave it". Lol... but it's more of commands than tricks anyhow..

railNtrailcowgrl: I figured. Sigh. I've been trying to teach Cadence "rollover" since the day I got him (about 4 months ago), and he still HATES being rolled over lol. And the luring thing doesn't help with him either. He just gets up instead of rolling.

I have never had a dog that liked to roll over.

Ava
Sit
Down
Down on Side
Speak (Not bark but not a whisper, its just normal talking voice haha)
Shake
Wave
High Five
Spin
Roll Over
Wait
Play Dead (Bang Bang)
Gets Tissue When Someone Sneezes
Kiss
Give It
Get it
Attention! (She sits straight up when told this, then when I turn around she lays down, then I bend my knees and jump back around to look at her she is already sitting again. I'm doing this to show my husbands friends who are all sailors )

Sayings
"Are you hungry?"
"Wheres your ducky?"
"Do you have to go potty?"
"Get the lizards!" (She never does get them, the first time she saw lizards was in CA this summer and now she looks for them at the beach!)
"What do you see?!"
"Is daddy home?!"
"Nigh night time."
"I'll be right back." (She doesn't get upset when I leave and say this cause she knows it wont be long.)
"Are we gonna go see Jazzy?" (Her best doggy friend)

Failed Tricks
What does a shark look like? (Show teeth)
Howl
Bring Pop (I just put this one on hold for the moment since I've been working on "Attention!")

All I can say is WOW!!!!! I wish everyone had also put the ages of there dogs

Maggie is 15 months and does sit, stay, down, bed, fetch, come, kennel (she will go in her kennel at bedtime if I say kennel, no other time though lol)all of these are not 100% though we are working on that but she is soooo easily distracted. She reminds us of the dog on the kids movie up...where he is talking and all of a sudden turns and says "squirel"

Bella is 13 weeks and does sit and a short stay

* oh I forgot Maggie has take and leave it down too
