Question puppy house training issues

i have a pom/chi mix he will be 4 months on the 31st. I am working on house training him but having difficulties. we have an older dog 9 yrs who peed in the puppy's sleeping room ever since he has been peeing in small amounts all over the house i have been restricting his area so he is mostly in 'his' room and when he is in there no accidents but as soon as he gets out he will spot pee. he iis taken out often and will do it even if he has already urinated. how can i stop this?

This sounds like anxiety or stress based marking. How do the two dogs get along? Is the older dog male or female? Is the older dog stressed as well? Is the older dog spayed or neutered?

Have you cleaned the accident spots with a proper enzyme based cleaner?

Okay..so clarify for me..the puppy is spot peeing? Is he lifting his leg (it is a bit early, but worth asking)...was he taken outside immediately after being let out from his "room"? Or is the older dog peeing? LOL

A couple of things: it is very important that your older guy is not allowed to be overwhelmed by the pup. If he snarks at the puppy or looks stressed remove the pup from his area and work some training with the pup or something to distract pup from bugging older guy.

It is also very important that your pup be taken outside before, during and after ANY and all excitement. His bladder is teeny and it only takes a few minutes if he's being active to fill up again.

the puppy(Rocko) is spot peing not lifting his leg. the adult(Sam) peed once in the puppies area which started the problem he is bing taken out when he wakes up when we let him out of his space basically we try to take him out every hour. we do seperate them when the Rocko goes after Sam and Sam is now deffending himself just a slight growl to let Rocko know its time to back off and Rocko does listen.

Okay. So how frequently is the spot peeing happening, do you see it happening or are you finding it after the fact? Are you 100 percent sure it's the puppy and not the older dog?
If you are sure, is there anything preceding the urination happening...like does it happen right after the older guy growls at him? After some play or training time?
When you take him out every hour does he go? Do you reward him?

You may want to get his urine checked if this is truly random and not submissive peeing or basic housetraining accidents.

Either way, housetraining him will be very difficult if you don't find a way to keep the accidents from occurring..management is key. Maybe tether him to you on a leash when he is not in his room?

Re: puppy house training issues

it is a couple times a day we have seen him do it but not every time. it is usually when we and sam are not paying attention to him. so might it be a cry for attention? he does go every time i walk him pee at least and yes i praise and reward him. it is not his usual amount of pee when he goes in the house either it is just small amounts.

Re: puppy house training issues

Okay. So it sounds like this is more a management issue. You cannot expect a puppy to know the diff between inside and outside yet and so constant supervision is necessary...for the times when you have seen him do it, does he do any sniffing or circling prior? He needs to be watched for these little signals and rushed outside. Puppies only have the "program" of dont' pee where they eat and sleep...anything else if fair game and that is what housetraining is...freedom in the house must be EARNED over time and gradually increased. Any accidents that happen are the humans responsibility, not the pup. When in doubt, take him out, even if you just did it fifteen minutes ago!
