| Puppy Discipline What is the best way to discipline a 8 week old puppy? I understand that when it has "accidents" that it is my lack of attention to him, but what about when he's chewing and biting on electrical cords and people? LOL |

| Re: Puppy Discipline You don't discipline. You redirect.
If your puppy is chewing something inappropriate, you play "Trade!". Chewing on you? Say "ah ah!" and give him a bone, kong, some other toy and praise for chewing that. No muss no fuss.
Even better, if you can't be watching him, he should be either in his kennel or tethered to you. |

| Re: Puppy Discipline Discipline doesn't really have any effect on a pup that young. At least, not a good effect. Prevention is a more constructive use of your energy. |

| Re: Puppy Discipline Ditto what they said...supervision and re-direction. The only "training" you should be concentrating on right now is potty training, crate training, and maybe getting used to his name by using it frequently. |

Does anyone know any more that the word "discipline" means to teach and NOT to punish? |

I was an English major so the correct use of words was drummed into me. |

I think my OP was taken out of context. =P |

Originally Posted by skelaki I was actually referring more to those that answered your OP. I was an English major so the correct use of words was drummed into me. | From the Mirriam Webster dictionary: Quote:
Main Entry: discipline
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): disciplined; disciplin·ing
Date: 14th century
1 : to punish or penalize for the sake of discipline
2 : to train or develop by instruction and exercise especially in self-control
3 a : to bring (a group) under control <discipline troops> b : to impose order upon <serious writers discipline and refine their writing styles>
synonyms see punish, teach
| The OP was using discipline as a verb. The main definition of this word as a verb is to punish or penalize for the sake of discipline.
As a noun, it's primary meaning is also punishment. Quote:
Main Entry: 1dis·ci·pline
Pronunciation: \ˈdi-sə-plən\
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French & Latin; Anglo-French, from Latin disciplina teaching, learning, from discipulus pupil
Date: 13th century
1 : punishment
2 obsolete : instruction
3 : a field of study
4 : training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character
5 a : control gained by enforcing obedience or order b : orderly or prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior c : self-control
6 : a rule or system of rules governing conduct or activity
| It obviously also means "to train or develop by instruction..." but you can hardly fault people for jumping to the most common usage/definition of the word.
