microchip vs. tattoo

Our vet said zeus will be ready for neutering at the end of the month so I've been looking at prices.
I wanted to get him microchipped at the same time but found that the cheapest price for that is $80. add that to the neutering (cheapest I found was $180) and its pretty expensive for a full time student.
My town's humane society doesn't do neutering for the general public, but I found a Spay clinic that will do it for $150, but they don't do micro chips, only tattoos.

I was wondering if it makes a difference which one I get? I could save a lot of money getting a tattoo instead of a chip, but I don't want my need to save money decide whats best for my dog.
so chip or tattoo?

Also, I was looking into getting pet insurance, does anyone know if it covers neutering? and what insurance companies would you recommend? I've been looking into Vetinsurance and Petsecure.

Re: microchip vs. tattoo

Of the insurance I have looked at I like Pet Plan the best.. there may be better ones but my Vets have recommended it.

AKC also has insurance that INCLUDES Spaying and/or neutering. Go to the AKC website and see. I do not think the underweriters care if the dog is pure bred or not! I do not know the cost.

My dog is Chipped thru AVID but I am thinking that another dog I would have BOTH chipped and Tatoo done. This way there is something if the Chip Reader technology changes (not that any thing electronic changes over the avg. 10 year life span of a dog.. ).

Re: microchip vs. tattoo

Either a tattoo or microchip will have pluses and minuses. If you get a tattoo it could fade over time or the dog's hair could grow over it making it harder to read. And, if you have it done in the ear as they were years ago, a thief could easily just cut off the ear (this is why they're generally done on the stomach area or inside the thigh). On the other hand, if you get a microchip it could migrate, some shelters/vet's offices might not have the scanner to detect the chip, and there is some evidence that they could possibly cause cancer in some dogs (I have not experienced this myself). I've had both tattoo and microchips on different dogs but, luckily never had to depend on the ID to get a lost pet returned. The most important thing is to register the chip or tattoo in order to give yourself the best chance of getting the dog returned if it ever should get lost.

To compare various insurance plans and decide which, if any, is best for you go to http://www.petinsurancereview.com/ . Here's one that, depending on the coverage you choose, will cover spay/neuter. http://www.embracepetinsurance.com/c...ness-Plan.aspx but whether or not it would be worth whatever it costs is up to you. This companay, Embrace, looks pretty good as does Petplan USA http://www.gopetplan.com/ . But look at them all and see which is best for you.

Back to the ID, if you can afford tattoo now, go for that. You can always have the microchip done later if you want.
