Help teaching small dog "down"

So I recently started clicker training my 5 month old chion, and he;s teken to it really well. He learned sit in no time, so I figured the next step would be to teach him to lie down.
I've been having a little trouble though and just needed some advice.
I start by getting him to sit and then I'll take a treat and start in front of his face and lower it to the ground. I started just lowering it a bit and clicking when he lowers his head and giving him the treat. I then progressed to putting it directly on the ground.
The problem is, he will stand up and just put his head down and grab it. So I tried holding his butt down but he still will just lower his head.
advice? what am I doing wrong?

Re: Help teaching small dog "down"

Little dogs are notorious for doing the "stretch" and popping up...

I would stop trying to shape or force the down and try capturing it instead. I'm assuming since you are using a clicker that you know these terms..if not, just ask.

I suggest taking the pup into the bathroom (small room) and just having a seat. Take a magazine or just sit there and WAIT. Eventually, pup gets bored and lies down. Click treat. Repeat..once you start having the behaviour offered, add the cue.

You can also try "tunneling" under your leg. http://dogtime.com/basic-commands-obedience-down.html
