Car sickness making car rides bad experience.

Sasha is getting bigger and I still have to pick her up most the time to get her in the car.I dont really blame her, she gets soo sick.I literally have to drive over the speed limit to get to the Park/Vet/Lake before she barfs.
How can I help her.The rides are short too we are talking at most 15min. so I dont know that its enough to give her medications or if there are other options.
We love to take the dogs out I hate the idea of leaving her behind..Ive tried putting her in the front seat, the back of the van on the floor and she drools and then barfs at least 75 percent of the time.

Some dogs (like some humans) can be very sensitive to motion and it's often related to the inner ear. Dogs with ear problems have a very hard time with this. If that's your situation, the only remedy that seems to work are drugs like Dramamine about a half hour before the trip.

Otherwise, you can try the typical desensitzing..in the car without going anywhere, then down the driveway and back, down the street and back, etc.

Re: Car sickness making car rides bad experience.

you may want to try not feeding her before going out or at least waiting a few hours. How old is she? My bella used to get sick in the car and our vet reccomended not feeding her before going in the car and eventually she did grow out of it. You also may want to try rescue remedy if she is vomiting because she is stressed. You can find it at vitamin stores and other health foods places... just give it to her about 15 mins before you get in the car and it should calm her for the ride.

Try giving her ginger snaps. Ginger is a natural remedy for nausea. We tried this for Murray, my Cocker Spaniel, and it seemed to help a little. He would always get sick in the car when he was a puppy, and now he does just fine (besides being a little freaked out), so I can attest to the "some dogs grow out of it" thing. Hope it works out for you!

In addition to the recommendations above, have you tried driving with the windows down? For my dog that's what makes the difference b/t puke and no puke..

I hope she outgrows it.She is still very young, only 4mnths.I have tried with the window open and with the AC on neither makes a difference.I will try the ginger snaps and making sure she doesnt eat before going. We dont always plan our trips though, some are just spur of the moment because the weathers nice and we are bored.

until she grows out of it you may also want to try crateing her in the car... i found that when bella was little a lot of what made her sick was all the movement in the car.. i found crateing her (or holding her when she was really little) helped a little bit but it didn't completely work all the time.

Re: Car sickness making car rides bad experience.

ginger capsules may help.

Usually this is caused by anxciety(sp?)

try to avoid trips if not necissary temporarilly.

Start by bringing her in the car and giving her a great treat (meat) in the car. but dont go anywhere

then just go down the driveway or up the street and end w great treat and play/ walk.

then short distance to a fun place.

work your way up
