When I allow my cairn terrier to get a hold of some toys that he likes a lot, it takes a pretty long time to get him to let go... He usually runs away from me and has his tail up (dominance sort of?) .... He sometimes growls at me when I give him a kong toy and i get near. However, before I give it to him he is fine and after wards he's back to normal too...

should I go back to training and start over with drop it and stuff? It's only with certain items... By the way, he's 1 year old.

You're probably going to be told not to worry about dominance. But I would be concerned if my dog was growling at me when I approached him/her just because he had something he didn't want me to take away from him. My opinion, only.
