This has been going on for a week now plus the poor tenants down below!!! Me waking up in the middle of night because of Simba 5 years old scratching crying and barking and even sometimes peeing in his crate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I woke up to him laying in his own urine. He isn't potty trained (we are working on that) and likes to get into everything. My other dog we can leave out at night but not during the day since he is kennel trained. I would like to get them off using the kennel.. I did buy a doggy diaper for my other dog Rocco at night and that worked and he doesn't need it at night anymore. What else can I do besides crate training and not having to wake up to a mess every morning?
First, get Simba checked for a Urinary tract infection to eliminate that as a cause. Then I'd look into a belly band. It helps them to keep control of their bladder.
Be sure you are cutting off water and food early, I take up the water here at 7:00 pm, bed time is 10:00 and they go out to relieve them selves a few minutes before. Get a routine going and that will also make it easier. http://www.dog-breeds.net/dog_diaper_belly_band.htm
Would certainly get a vet check as this sounds like new behaviour so could be medical.
I disagree with lifting water up, this can cause both health and behaviour problems and actually in the UK a dog must have access to clean water at all times. I certainly would not lift water until the vet has given an all clear on infection or other medical causes.
Is there any other option than crate training? I wonder if I use the belly band and gate him that might help with him freaking out in the kennel every night?
Have you tried giving him a frozen stuffed Kong to chew and suck on? this often soothes dogs as well as making the crate a good place to be. You could also try an Expen. I wouldn't contain him to a room, he could chew something and get sick or hurt.
