housetraining problem

i am taking my dog out on a very regular schedule (when she wakes up, after meals, naps, and before bedtime) however when we go out, she simply walks around. she refuses to use the bathroom outside. i will stay out with her for over an hour but she will wait until we get back inside to do her business. i dont know what to do to help solve this problem...

There seems to be many methods of housetraining. I will tell you what worked for me. Not to start off with I am really not a big fan of crate other than using them to housetrain in the begining I do not use them. If you know your dog has to go and does not after about 15 min out side put your puppy back in the crate then take her/him out ever 10 minutes untill he goes. or Watch her like a hawk and catch her in the act and say "oh no no" in a firm voice and run her outside then of course lay on the praise really big.

How old and what kind of puppy do you have.

she is about four months old, and she is a yorkie. i have only had her about a month now...she was given to me by an older lady who didnt have the energy to keep up with her. the lady i got her from told me that she was housetrained, but i am not seeing any signs of it.

let me correct myself...she is about five months old now. she was four when i got her. and also...with the crate she doesnt hold it when i put her in the crate. she seems to have no problem doing her business in there.

It almost sounds like she is trained to only go inside. Read the house training sticky for starters.

When you come back in and she starts to go, correct her and get her right back outside. Once you get her to go outside, reward her well with treats and praise. Try getting her excited while you're outside. A little play can get things moving for a puppy

Hmmm. are you sure the crate is small enough. My puppy (a maltipoo) who I got when he was 4 months old pooped and peed in his crate for about the 1st month. But that was only over night he really just could not hold it I guess. Now he is I think 6 months and he does not do that anymore.

My brother had a maltese that did what your yorkie is doing. he & his wife finally got sick of no progress and gave him back to the pet store. I used to pet sit for a lot of families with Bichons and not a single one was housebroken. I do not know maybe some dogs just never get it.

Your Yorkie is still young so I wouldnt give up though I have heard sometimes it takes up to a year to housebreak some dogs. Especially little ones for some reason. They say they have smaller bladders but they also drink less oh well I do not know.

Good luck.
