IamTracy is on a distinguished road
newbie fixing to adopt

Hi everyone,
I am a huge fan of agility, flyball, disc dogs, freestyle. I want to do it ALL!! I've been talking to breeders and visiting our local shelter for a Collie, border collie, aussie or cattle dog / blue heeler type mixes.

I finally found a litter of aussie + cattle dog mixes, born Jan 15/07. Both parents are reported to be pure (accidental breeding), mom the cattle dog, dad the aussie. Originally a litter of 9, 5 pups still available. 4 males, 1 female. I visited the litter twice today and have been approved to adopt.

NOW i'm getting cold feet. NOW I can think of everything I dont know.

Any fancier of these types of breeds in regards to these types of activities?
I would really appreciate your thoughts and advice.

Here's a picture of the remaining pups.

Thank you in advance
Tracy

I am not very familiar with agility or dog sports, other than watching it on Animal Planet...but they are the sweetest puppies! I have co-owned a red Heeler mix and if he'd been trained to do it he would definitely have been well-suited for agility!

Keno's Mom is on a distinguished road
You are getting a very active dog - perfect for the agility/flyball, etc games. However, you first need to train your dog in obedience and slowly work on those games. Take it a step at a time.

Keno (our lab) didn't get into agility till she was 3 yrs old - loves it (especially jumps/tunnels). I'd sign your pup up for basic obedience and check into local training facilities on the agility part later. Since you won't have a small dog (like a JRT), you may have to wait for your dog to grow up before doing the jumping parts in agaility. Training facilities have different policies on the age thing. The one I took Keno to had a minimum of 14 months old before starting.

Agility requires your dog to be very good at sit, stay, come, recall to start. Most puppies would not be reliable at a young age - so start with basic obedience and work up.
