Someone please help we can now take our pup for walks but she is not keen to walk she may follow if someone runs in front shaking a bag of treats or she likes to run on the lead in open spaces but will not just walk down the street i have to stop at every gateway because she tries to go in i say no and wait for her to carry on when she does run i say good girl good girl etc... but it takes 2 people and a bag of treats to just get round the block. I dont give her the treats untill we are back home and i make a big fuss of her before and after the walk so she understands it's fun. What am i doing wrong!!

Give her the treats while she is walking and just go on a short walk at first.

For example, plan to walk only a few houses away and give her a treat every so many feet until you reach your goal distance for the day and then return home. You can add distance and lengthen treat intervals over time.

If you are only treating when she gets home it's no wonder she wants to get home asap, the reward is at home. Stop treating her at end of walk and only treat for walking, once home again treats stop.

You might also try playing a game when you reach goal distance if she likes that. If she loves fetch or tug, then play for a few minutes when you reach the goal and then put toy away until next walk.

Have a look at the sticky thread on loose leash walking at the top of this forum - it builds up slowly from starting at home.

How old is your pup? She may be too young to go on walks more that a few feet. Walking too far too young can cause the pup joint damamge.

In the mean time, work on the loose leash techniques in the sticky at the top of the forum in the house and yard for now. Give your pup time to get used to being on a leash before you take it out in public.

Is it smart to bring my older pup with me when I take my new pup out or should I take them both out seperatly so i can have some alone time with my younger one to train. Right now he stares at my older one and walks all crazy. I would love to read up on how to train my puppy but most if not all books are on how to train a SINGLE dog. Never how to train a new pup with a current older dog in the house. Any suggestions? I don't want to disclude my older one so i bring him when ever i bring my puppy out. Should he stay behind till we get the walking down?

Im trying the short walks but Poppy is not even keen to leave the house i tried treats if she does walk but its very hit and miss and im still standing around willing her to walk. if we are at the park with open space she will run like the wind but im now worried about damaging her joints as someone mentioned? i am just going to have to keep trying. Thanks for everyones help, i wil try and keep you updated.
