Re: Reward, conditioning question?

Is it time for Harrise to jump in and say something like, "I like turtles......" ??????

I think after RB's post of clubbing attire we need to invoke an immediate rule to limit all photos to those of our pets. Pheeeewwwweeeeeee............ I don't think I will ever be the same after seeing this..

Re: Reward, conditioning question?

reafe: you are missing a big part of the picture. Like wvasko, I am unapologetically old school. Though I have never used the J.A.S.A force collar, I can recite whole chapters from Koehler from memory.

BUT...you never want to go harsher than necessary, and never-ever just to show the dog who's boss. You are looking to effect a change in a dog's behavior, and "gentle as possible" comes before "harsh as necessary" in the order of operations.

Whatever else can be said about non-force training methods, they are far less likely to cause irreversible harm to a dog--even if misapplied. Too-vigorous corrections with a choker can injure a dog and the misuse of e-collars can (and has) turned dogs into emotional basket cases. I've seen quite a few half-fast "trainers" rewarding obnoxious behavior, and thinking they were using positive training methods. They actually were, but not the way they thought. Mostly, it seemed to me, that reversing their mistakes would not have been huge undertaking.

Re: Reward, conditioning question?

I think you mispelled the "half-fast trainers", I always spelled that as "half-as*ed" but that's just me.

You know what amazes me on all this silly stuff is I could never understand why the above mentioned trainers could not understand the simplicity of doing the easy on dog stuff first. I guess it's because I was a tad lazy that I looked for the easy way. Old school people understand corrections are hard on man and beast.

I like to tell myself that it's more clever than half@ssed, halfa$$ed, and similar obvious misspellings of vulgar terms. Maybe it ain't true, but I'll continue to tell myself it is.

You realize that if you don't have this resolved quickly, we'll just send Doberman after you anyway.

As long as it's a Doberman in the senior years of life, and you give me a 3 week warning so I vacate the premises. I may be old but I not stupid.
