| Help! Rotten puppy being a butthead! My puppy is really smart. She knows all kinds of tricks but I let her outside without a leash(we live in the country and have a lot of land)and she is so smart When I try to catch her she thinks I am playing and runs from me and sometimes she puts herself in danger by chassing our baby horse and almost gets kicked! I can never catch her and she puts herself in danger! HELP! |

| Well, stop chasing her! Squat down and call her to you. You should teach her some basic obedience along with tricks. One of the first commands needs to be COME! |

| Have a treat ready when you squat, or run into the house so she'll chase you. She keeps running because you're not as fun as running, so bribe her with a treat, but you do need to teach her a better recall. |

| It might help if you practice recalls on a drag line prior to allowing her off leash. Begin at a short distance without distractions and gradually work your way up. Make sure the treats you offer are extra special and tasty...dry kibble or hard starchy biscuits may not do the trick.
In addition, each time you call her and she comes have her sit while you place your hand on her collar, then offer the treat and then release her. |

| Another tip: Get yourself a clicker (or choose a verbal marker such as "YES!") and use it to mark whenever she looks at you. Hang out with her and have your clicker and treats ready. Wait for her to look at you and the second she does click! and treat. You can make noises to encourage her to look for now or even lure her with a treat using it like a magnet from her nose to your eyes. Once she starts looking at you frequently even without any cues from you start saying her name to get her to look, click and treat when she does. Do this frequently throughout the day for a couple days in a variety of locations including on a short leash outside.
After this you should be able to easily get her attention whenever you say her name. Now you can start practicing recalls. Say her name and encourage her towards you. The second she starts moving towards you say "come" (choose a different word if you have previously been using "come" without success) and immediately click and then treat when she gets to you. Practice indoors first from a short distance and use your reward marker (clicker or "YES!") to mark while she heads towards you, don't wait until she gets to you...it is the act of her moving towards you that you want to mark and then reward her when she gets to you.
To ensure success, never call the dog to you for anything negative such as punishment, baths, nail trimming. If you must do these things its best to go to her instead. Use her name and her recall for all kinds of positive things that occur in everyday life such as before you're going to take her for a walk, for her dinner, to play a game of fetch, ect. Call her out of the blue and give her a super tasty treat every once in a while.
