release command after stay

thanks for the responses in addressing the stay command. i have been working very hard at this all week with some success. my dog no longer trys to beat me to the door and will stay while i go out of it but i can tell he really has to fight the urge and at any moment he my give in. what i am not sure of is the release command. i have been saying come and then giving a treat and then actually going out the door but i feel this is still not quite right even though he is better than before. please any advice would be appreciated.

What I do for release is use a hand signal and say "up" at the end of every single stay command. I tug gently on the lead to get him up. I am sure I am wrong, as it seems i have been a lot lately, but that is what i do.

My release word is "okay" but most will advise you to pick a less common word. I know if I have my dog in a stay while talking to people when trying to give them advise on how to train their dog, sometimes the word "okay" will slip out of my mouth and my dog sometimes may get up.

To prevent this, you can also try very hard to always return to your dog before releasing them from any kind of long period "stay".

I use "okay". Also, every time I praise, instead of just saying "good dog", I say "Good sit" or "Good stay" - whatever the behavior is that I am praising.

See when I'm talking to people, I say "okay" in a different tone of voice than when I'm releasing the dogs. It's just a normal "okay" as opposed to a high-pitched, happy "okay!" They can tell the difference. >^^;<

Our release command is "release". Our trainer advised not to use "okay" or "alright", as they are too common and you could inadvertently release your dog.

Me too - my release okay is kind of high pitched squealy sounding, not anything like what I would use in a conversation.

I use "OK" too but I use a unique upbeat tone.

My release command up, is follwed by the next one, because what is he supposed to do next? So, it would be Moose, up, Moose Come, Moose heel. I always say his name BECAUSE I have a pack, they need to know which one I am talking to.

I do this as well, using the command "ok"
I think it is in the way you say it, ("tone") of voice. Teaching your dog to always look to you for guidence will help. By doing this he/she is always focusing on you. 99.99% of the time, it would'nt matter if someone else said the command, your dog will wait for yours ONLYS> JMO

Releasing the command before the dog has a chance to break. Its the best way to teach stay. In the begining don't expect to much distance and duration. Its learning what the word means, that's important.

After you are getting a good stay, "dog knows what it means" keep adding seconds, then minutes, progress into distance. A little at a time is best. Stepping short on the leash will help the dog from breaking the command as well.

Try teaching in a busy enviroment, and work on your commands. After practicing for a couple of weeks, try out the theory yourself. Or simply change the word, if needed.
