Training Vs Real Life

My dog does great when we are doing training sessions, he leaves it and waits and stays but once I need him to listen in real life he forgets everything and is a maniac how do I get him to listen when we are not in training mode?

Re: Training Vs Real Life

You need to proof the behaviors by working them in the real world.

Basically, once the behavior is 100% in the house, take him outside to the back yard. Then the front, then on a walk, then maybe a pet store.

There is a great article in the October 2008 Whole Dog Journal about this.

Re: Training Vs Real Life

I used to work with my GSD's at a park where there were lots of distractions. This got them used to listening to me even if there were kids, other dogs, bicycles, etc. all around them while working. I would also sometime take them next to the train tracks or where ever else I could think of to expose them to a variety of distractions.

Just train everywhere, outside , inside, at the park, in the backyard etc.. Dogs need to ne taught they need to listen to you outside of the designated training area.

You did not mention age or length of training program, how and where you started your dog.

Well you did mention consistency and also 9 mths is still a very young pup/dog. Also with kids and other dog around could be a lot of peer pressure and with kids even some behind the back stuff you don't know about. The good news is just keep working and do not ever expect 100% with dogs let alone pups so you are probably where you should be(just expecting too much too soon.)
