Expections for training a puppy

What kind of traing expections should I have for my 13 week tibetian terrier?

I have her starting her puppy/obience classes later this week, I just hope that im prepared and everything goes well.

I have been training her every day, she loves to work for her food, the only way I can even get her to eat most of the time is to get her working for her food.

so far she can sit, lay down, stand, somewhat stay - that one is sorta a battle but she is learning very well. and her new trick is pound it - that is when i command her to pound it and she will bump her nose agaist my fist...

Is this the right direction to go? just keep working on the basic commands?

I dont really know what to expect from her, or how long it takes until she totally understands her commands.

any advice would be great

Thanks

Sounds like a great start! I would also work on focus, name recognition and a reliable recall. Don't forget to proof behaviors by playing with duration, distance and distractions as you go. You might find that your puppy gets to class and doesn't know the behaviors practiced at home. That's okay, just lower your criteria and up your reinforcements to regain that confidence. Socialization with people and other animals is also very, very important. Your class will provide a good basis for this, but it's important to keep taking your puppy places to meet new people and other critters during and after this initial class.

It indeed sounds like you're on your way to raising an obedient dog. Just keep at it! You have the best resource possible right here on the dogforums. Might I also recommend purchasing a quality book for reading? There are even several good ebooks found online- "SitStayFetch" is my favorite- it gets nothing but good reviews: here
If you have a borders around you, I would also reccomend you pick up Dog Whisperer With Cesar Millan: The Ultimate Episode Guide- by Jim Milio; it's some terrific reading.

Best of luck,
Tracy

Re: Expections for training a puppy

Thanks for the feedback!

I have been working on her name, she knows it very well.

Recal is going good, she usally comes everytime, if there is something that catches her eye she might be a little hesitant to come but if i stay patient and clear she will come after a brief stall.

we are working with her is all different kind of elements, backyard, inside, dogparks and lakes...

We have alot of friends with dogs of all sizes and we have been introducing her to pugs, to shnoodles, and chesipeek bay retrievers all shapes and sizes.Loki is a little nervous around the bigger dogs, she isnt bad she just dosent really like to play with them, she will stand a few feet behind me and just watch and if they come up to her she just stands there.
If there is higher ground to get to, she will get to it, im not to sure why.

I think just a little more practice and playtime with bigger dogs would calm her and she would realize that some of these biggers dogs are pretty darn fun.

Ive read a few books, clicker training and training books and just general dog books,

Thank you guys so much for the help!
I just want my dog to be a very good dog, the kind of dog where people will say wow that is one of the best behaved dogs ive seen.

Ive done the research on the breed and they have alot of great qualities and im more than confindent that she is on the way, but im just unsure of myself more than anything.

Her classes start tommorow night, I will let everybody know how she makes out.
