"Professional" Puppy training Class

Friend of mine got a puppy and decided to go to Puppy class. Large breed bully dog.

First class the trainer is going on about pack leader and dominancne.. He told her "ALWAYS let the dog see you eat first, never let the dog walk in front etc." the usual bad advice...

Then on to the Crate Training...
"Put the dog (as in force) in the crate and shut the door. If the dog carries on THROW A SNEAKER AT THE CRATE so the DOG THINKS THE CRATE IS MAD AT HER AND SHE WILL QUIET DOWN...... "

I suggested the usual sites and books to my friend.. and to RUN, not walk, from this class. I also warned her that "the alpha roll is coming... REFUSE to do it.. it will only scare your puppy.." This is a 10 week old PUPPY.

I also asked her if she had a baby and the baby was making noise after being put in her crib if she would toss a sneaker at the crib to quiet the baby. She said to me, "Hmm... Good Point!..."

After my vacation we are going to get together and do a little joint dog training.... Meanwhile I am sending her a clicker and my copy of "The complete idiots guide to Positive dog training" to get her started....

Oh my.. if that "trainer" can get money to teach people to train puppies, so can I...

I used to run into this in "professional" photographers like this.. the guys who set the camera on "P" mode and got money for shooting "professional weddings" (the 'P' mode stands for professinal, right???? ).

Rant rant rant rant Grumble... Grumble...

*sigh*

Boy, I thought I knew all the tricks. The sneaker at crate is good. I've been using steel-toe boots and I keep breaking the crate.

I just don't think people have the right concept on what a puppy is That's one of those trainers that should not be allowed near an empty leash. Aside from ruining pups he gives all trainers a bad name.

Re: "Professional" Puppy training Class

If I wasn't so far from this guy's location I would go give him some competition... LOL.

I met someone on a walk the other night. Five year old GSD (white). Nicely built dog. Fat. Kept barking on leash (Atka was off leash and I put her in a down and wait... and she did). Dog was pulling the woman all over the place. Not aggressive... just barking at me and my dog on leash. Attention span of a gnat... and the woman was telling me how "wonderful" he is and how he has arthritis.. and she is concerned.

I suggested training and cutting the dog's food by 1/3rd. "But I will feel so guilty.." and if he has to be put down due to arthritis from carrying too much weight you won't fell guilty?

Sometimes I think that if I just could get 3 days in a row with most of the dogs I meet on walks they, and their owners, would be so much happier and at ease.

I am NOT a professional dog trainer but considering what this friend told me and what I see out there, it seems to me I could just hang out a shingle and turn away business because there would be so much of it.

and I wouldn't beat up and terrify puppies in the process.
