Play fighting out of hand (long)

First I want to say hi to everyone this is my first post and if this topic has been covered I apologize but I used the search function and while I found similair threads I did not find one that gave me a solution.

Background. I have a WONDERFUL 8 month old Akita who has for the most part been wonderfully trained and socialized. He is not nuetered at this time. He is wonderful with all other dogs, my young nieces and nephews and even cats. We have been living by ourselfs in a house with a large yard since ive had him.

Now, my friend recently moved in about month ago. He has a 14 month old female english bulldog. She is spayed. Since moving in, the dogs have for the most part got along great. They share, and play, their dominance issues have been worked out, with my Akita on top, but for the most part he is no more dominant then her. They share food, water and toys with no problem.

The problem is, when they play they play ROUGH and now there is a concern of one or both of the dogs getting scarred up. They will play to the point where now the bulldog has some small bloody spots on her face and behind her ears. My Akita's neck was chewed up enough that some of his hair started falling out and his ears are full of small scabs.

When I am home, I use a distraction or say enough and they will stop, for at least a little while. But when I am not home and there is no one to tell them to cool it off, they both get a little tore up. My Akita is for the most part the sole instigator, but once the bulldog gets going, she is just as bad.

I would think this is just normal puppy play, but the fact that her face is getting bloodied up concerns me. I plan on neutering my dog in the next two months even though the vet told me to wait a year, but I am not sure that is playing a huge factor in this.
EDIT:: I forgot to add that neither dog will yelp or give any indication that one dog or another is going to far.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you

Adam

They should not be allowed to play unattended and unsupervised. End of story. You should be there to give them time outs when they start to get more wound up. Believe me, if it seems to be escalating there will eventually be a fight with consequences and someone will get hurt. Believe me, I've been through it recently.

No play unsupervised. They should be crated or separated while you guys are not at home.
