We have a 3 year old German Shepherd named Cooper....Cooper is from a German Shepherd rescue and what little we know about his past, he was taken away from people who were abusing him...He is our 2nd rescue German Shepherd and both of them have been big lovable furballs even though both were treated poorly...
Cooper has one very unusual habit....He will not use the bathroom in his own yard and we have a large yard...We are not sure if this is something that was done by the original owners but we have to take him for 4 walks every day so he can use the bathroom because he will hold it and not go in our yard...We always clean up after him but some days it would be nice not to have to walk Cooper two miles for him to go to the bathroom...
Any suggestions or ideas would be most appreciated....

It is possible that the dog was taught not to potty in the backyard and you need to teach him its ok to pee/poop there. My suggestions might work or not, but have somebody pee/poop outside in the backyard with the dog there. I had a friend who had a dog lived in APT for many years and he was not used to have a yard. He would hold until someone takes him for walk outside until my friend's brother volunteered to pee. The dog finally peed/pooped in the backyard.
