So I took all 3 dogs on a walk last night and guess what happenes...

...Nothing. They behaved. They walked with slack in their leashes. They saw a man come out of the dark and Chance barked and Kody howled, but they stayed under my control. He caught me by surprise too TBH.

They walked, we jogged a little. It was amazing. It was a great feeling to be able to leash up 3 dogs and say, "We ARE going for a walk and it WILL be enjoyable."

I think coming here has helped me a lot, but I also think the fact that we are stable, in a house that works, with a backyard they love, helps a lot. That apartment was way too small, and in a way the previous house was too big. And the dogs were very young. They are growing up beautifully, and I know they are where they belong.

I was always really good with dogs. Maybe not at training them. Maybe not vet-related things.. but I always had a way with dogs.

I would walk into a new persons house, and their dogs would just gravitate to me. I would be the one finding dogs on the side of the road, and they would come over to me. I have always felt a connection with dogs and am glad that I am successful at owning the 3 I own. Because believe me, 2 beagles and a GSD is not an EASY combination!

So I guess that was a little brag. It was also a little pick-me-up because I just found out Kody has COPV and it's upsets and scares me. I have been feeling like nothing I do is right, and my dogs are always suffering. And I know plenty of people (non DF people) that feed their dogs crap and dont walk them, and dont vaccinate them, and don't get their nails trimmed, and their dogs NEVER have any issues. Last week I pulled a rock-like-thing out of Chances butt, and this week Kody has COPV. sigh.

I hope things get better. But at least I know I can walk them when I want to.

I'm glad they were so weel behaved!

Don't you hate that...you try to do the best for your dogs and they get sick or something, and someone you know who treats their dogs like dirt, live for ages!!

What is COPV?

Um if that's COPV for real and if it just manifested, wouldn't he be highly contagious right now?

Because you just took a very contagious dog for a walk around the neighborhood, and like yesterday were petting a shelter full of dogs (I realize you didn't know yesterday, but that's why you don't pet dogs at the shelter without express permission/a good reason)

Well I did not know Kody had it until we got home and I looked inside his mouth to see if the gentle lead hurt him at all.

Also, I cant be a carrier. I washed my hands both before and after, and once during my visit to the shelter. They let the dogs play together. I know my hands were clean when I went there. Also, they are in WIRE cages. I was not the only one petting them. They get taken out to the dog park they have there daily and all the dogs get to interact with each other, as well as other dogs they may be going home with. i really do not feel I did anything wrong. And I had a good reason to pet the dogs, they're at the shelter. They deseve to be pet.

I honestly can't fathom why an animal shelter would do this... I believe you, but its still bugging me..... I know here that parvo/bordetella, worms are a HUGE concern in ANY kennel situation...vacinated or not....

I know we had a wave of distemper come through Socal... you can track distemper around on your shoes without even touching a single dog.

So yeah, its generally not a good idea, personally i talk to the dogs, give them a little time each..... they don't need touch to feel love.

but yeah, glad you had a good walk

that doesn't change the fact that it spreads disease.

If one of those dogs had parvo... they all could easily catch it.

I could say "I want to play with that dog to see if it is a good match"
and then do that 20 times if I wanted to. Theyre not going to make me bleach my clothes every time.

I dont know of a shelter that frowns upon you petting the dogs. They all enourage it. In that environment, if something is there, theyre pretty much all going to catch it.

Also, all the young young puppies were behind glass. Only the older, vaccinated dogs were in kennels. Aside from the very first puppy I posted.

Let's not rain on the parade by turning this into a "you shouldn't have touched the shelter dogs because Kody might have COPV and you might have distemper on your shoes" thread.

True, circumstances with the COPV and the shelter dogs are unfortunate but given the timing, there is no one to blame here.

Jenn, kudos on the trouble-free walk. When it comes to dog training, progress comes in such baby steps that it's easy to feel like no progress is being made at all. Until one day your dogs surprise you by showing you they've really been picking things up all along. I've witnessed your troubled times bringing these dogs up and you deserve to go out and enjoy yourself with them without having to worry about them acting up. Congratulations and here's to many happy walks with you and your trio.

Thanks! It has been some troubling times. Not really their fault or mine, just unfortunate things kept happening. Moved into a house- 6 months later into a different house, 5 months later into a different apartment, 3 months later into a new house. I'm happy where we are at.

Haha try running with the 3 dogs I have and then when your foot hits the ground and is a little more loud than usual, Chance STOPS in his tracks and looks back and you run RIGHT INTO HIM! lol

Cain and Pandora I can jog with just fine but Luke has this horrible habit of taking 3 steps and then stopping turning his front half of his body around to look at where I am (which as usual is always right behind him). He's terrified of being left I think.

Awesome, doesn't it feel good to know you can control four dogs.
