I had a consultation earlier this week with a canine behaviorist. We adopted an Australian Shepherd in July (he was 9 months and we are his 3rd home), and need help with some of his behaviors; primarily those dealing with Magic's not wanting anyone in our home. We haven't been sure if he is aggressive, fearful or protective.
The behaviorist spent about 1.5 hours at our home. The first hour was a discussion of Magic's history, what we have observed, and what we are doing. Interestingly enough, Magic barked at the behaviorist for less than a minute, and then was happy to have her in our home. That was a first! Therefore, she didn't get to see his behavior that we need help with.
The behaviorist initial impression is that Magic isn't what she would consider to be an aggressive dog. She needs to evaluate him more to assess his level of fear. Our first appointment is next Thursday, and she has asked that I invite three people over in 20 minute increments so that she can observe Magic's behavior. She did give me some short term suggestions on dealing with Magic, and so far they have been helpful.
Thanks again for all the advice.
Lisa
