Jumping OuT!!!

My dog Toby is JUMPING out of the back of my truck when we go out for rides etc,. ive tried tiein him down still jumped out, almost choked himself to death becuase i was quick to reacting luckily, tried NOT tieing him down, he jumps out even when were moving OR also at a stop sign, i let him ride inside, I DONT MIND, but i just want him to stay in the back and do his "smellin" while were drivin in the BACK of the truck. He DOES love riding in the truck with me and i take him a lot of places but inside, i jsut wish he stayed in the bed when we drove

Any Suggestions???????????

I wouldnt have him ride in the back. It doesnt seem safe for him. I would have him ride in the front with you.

How about bathing him since he seems to enjoy the ride from inside? Or how about fastening a kennel to your truck bed?

For your dog's safety, I would suggest keeping him in the front with you or as CP mentioned, secure a crate in the bed of the truck and let him ride in there.

Re: Jumping OuT!!!

Many many many dogs have died from leaving the back of pick up trucks. Letting a dog ride loose or tied in the back of a truck is actually illegal in several States unless the dog is in a crate or dog box.

I put the Crate back there and use bungee cords to tie it down and the dog can ride in the back then. However, now that I have a truck with a cargo area behind the seat, she rides there. In my other truck with no cargo area she rode shotgun but I had to turn off the passenger air bag.

I used to have dogs that hung their heads out the window, but I no longer allow that as it is dangerous for the dog. This dog has never shown an interest in doing that, so it works well.

Fact is, she is more interested in how I operate the truck than hanging her head out the window. I have been thinking of teaching her to drive. Once she has her license I am going to send her to work and retire.....

Re: Jumping OuT!!!

It is indeed illegal for dogs to ride in the bed of a truck in many places. IMO, it should be illegal EVERYWHERE. Although it may seem like it would be fun for the dog, it will not be fun when you get in an accident or have to slam on your brakes and the dog is seriously injured or killed. Please take the advice of the other posters and have your dog secured in a crate if he must ride in the bed of the truck, or let him ride in the cab with you.
