Jumping on the bed and couches

Ozzy is such a good boy but he will jump up on our bed and roll around in it lol

It's cute, but when he does it at 2:00 in the morning it scares the you know what out of us.

When I catch him about to jump on the couch or bed, I redirect him with an "eh eh!" and he doesn't jump. BUt if I'm not there to see it, he will jump up.

I've found him curled up on the couch after turning my back for a minute. He will get down if I tell him to, but I want him to stop jumping up to begin with.

Putting pots/pans, etc. on the furniture is not an option.

Any other advice?

Re: Jumping on the bed and couches

Hmmm. Do you not want him on the bed/couch at all? Since day one we have not let Charlie on the couch and whenever he jumped up, we would tell him calmly "off" and guide him down (by the collar or gently tapping his butt, whatever). But we weren't mean about it, like punishing him. Keep being consistent and he should get it. (I think, but what do I know, this is my only dog LOL)

He is, however, allowed on the bed when we invite him up. Sometimes he will still jump up uninvited and we tell him "off" and he jumps back down. If I see him running like he is going to jump up I try to be preemptive and give an "ah ah" like you do. A little trickier than the couch, but he's getting it.

Exactly, that's my question. Are you allowing the dog to be on a couch/bed at all? My dog is not, except for the few rare occasions. We have never allowed her on, so we've never had these kind of troubles.

Don't use pots/pans or anything like that. As soon as your dog puts one paw or something else on top of a couch or bed, tell him "NO" or "OFF" and make him get down. Soon he will learn that doing that is a bad behavior. Also, try substituting behavior. When you can, before your dog gets up on the bed/couch, tell him to sit, or lay down, and then reward him for doing something else besides the undesired act.

It'll take time. But I hope it all ends up working out well!

Re: Jumping on the bed and couches

Nope, we've never let him on the bed... but we adopted him a month ago and he is 7 years old... soooo he may have been allowed on the bed or furntiure in his previous life. The problem is at night when it's dark and I can't see him or I am sleeping... then *POUNCE* lol! He scares the crap outta us! He's pretty agile for a 7 year old since our bed is really high off the ground.

But I did try something last night. We turned off the lights and got into bed, and as soon as we were settled, I said, "Eh, eh! Go lay down." I didn't know if he was going to jump or not, but he didn't! First time he didn't... so maybe I did catch him.
