| Teaching puppy his name. My boyfriend and i just got our yorkipoo pup last week. he was 8 weeks old when we got him, he is now 9 and half. we seem to be having trouble teaching him his name though. We say his name anytime we talk to him and praise him. but it just doesnt seem like he is catching on to it. any tips on how to get him to learn his name? |

| Re: Teaching puppy his name. You're probably talking too much and his name is getting lost in a jumble of words.
Just say his name in an upbeat, happy tone. Have treats ready and the instant he turns his head toward you, throw the treat and say Yes.
Have your BF do the same thing. Play a back and forth game where he needs to start coming to you when you call his name to get the treat. |

| Re: Teaching puppy his name. keep in mind also that reputable breeders of toy dogs generally don't let their puppies leave their homes until 16 weeks because of their size and the speed at which they mature.... Your breeder let your puppy leave a full 8 weeks earlier than any reputable person would.....
as such your puppy is young.... really to young to be away from its mother.... as such you may find that teaching some of these basic things may have to wait until your puppy is older and more mature

s | I thought small breeds mature faster?
As far as I know eight weeks is the perfect age, generally. They should be socialized with their new home and environment. Earlier than that is a big no no for me. It's even illegal where I live. |

I know I keep my retriever pups until ten weeks.
while they do reach adulthood sooner, reputable breeders generally keep toy breeds until 16 weeks.....

s | I rather like this idea.
Of course, breeders would have to take on much more responsibility for the training that is normally done at this time....socialization, basic training and getting through the first critical fear period. The housetraining would be completed. Sit, come, down and stay commands would all be in place.
I like it a lot! |

| Re: Teaching puppy his name. well..im not having a problem potty training him or teaching him sit stay commands, he's just having a hard time catching on to his name. But i think it what TooneyDogs said about his name being lost in a bunch of other words. |

I like it a lot! | Nope the breeder doesn't do any more training than otherwise.... but in toy breeds who are so subject to low blood sugar etc.... it gives them a better start and a better chance in a new home.... remember these are teeny tiny puppies.....
but no the breeder still lets you housebreak and do all the training......
look around talk to breeders and you will see that no responsible breeder lets their toy puppies go this young. But then again this is a mixed breed puppy that has been deliberately bred so there is no question that this was an irresponsible backyard breeder or commercial breeder to begin with.

| Re: Teaching puppy his name. I have had my puppy for three weeks. He will be 12 weeks old on Thursday. We signed him up for clicker puppy training the next day. First class started in a week after we got him. I have 6 other dogs and 5 cats. I made sure his name did not sound like the others names and I made sure it was a easy name. When all the dogs are together and running in the yard I know he knows his name from the others names. I think he learned it the first week. He might have learned it without the class because he is a very smart dog but I think the clicker training made all the learning fast and easy. Look at U tube for training tips on learning there names. I love watching the 10-12 week old puppies do amazing things.

Thanks tho. Quote:
