Teaching my puppy to walk on a leash???

I have a 3 month old APBT and he is almost impossible to walk on a leash!!! As soon as i put him on the leash he freaks out and runs under tables and trys to chew to leash and shakes his head trying to get loose!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. He does good without a leash i can take him out and he follows me and does what i say, id just rather have him on a leash so that when he gets older i dont have to worry about him taking off after another dog!! Thanks in advance!!!

Clip the leash on him and have him drag it around the house. Also, when you clip the leash on his collar, make sure to give him a treat. Or, clip the leash on him and start playing with one of his toys. If he runs away, let him deal with it on his own time.

Also, try not to create any tension on the leash in the beginning, as it can scare the puppy. After letting him just drag the leash, practice just holding the leash and giving the puppy treats for acting calm. Then work on walking. Don't turn toward your puppy and try pulling him toward you, as he will find it threatening and just freak out or plop down and refuse to walk. Hold the leash, without creating tension, and turn AWAY from him while calling him to you. This kind of things starts with taking just one step at a time. Always have treats handy! Your puppy will soon learn that wearing leash = treats and praise. >^^;<

Also, this belongs in training. *Moves*

I had the same problem with my Shih Tzu......He is 10 months old and I have only had him for a couple of weeks.......Each time I put the lease on him he would run and hide.......Eventually he would come out of his hiding place dragging the lease..........when I took him outside he would lay down and not move........I pretended to ignore him and he eventually would get up and start walking.....I left the harness on him for him to get use to it.....as of 2 days ago when I put the lease on him he started walking with me and now when he goes outside and I am putting the lease on him he wags his tail..........He loves the lease now!
Good luck.......[/I][/I][/I]

I also agree with allowing them to roam freely with the leash clipped to them.

This helps them get used to it. Just make sure you supervise while the pup is walking around with it on. You dont want any tangles to happen!

first of congrats on your new puppy. i had the same exact thing happen with my pit. just let him drag around his leash for awhile he will get used to it. ohh and always make walk time fun for him. pit bulls are so incredibly sensitive.

Have you started any puppy training classes? Also you could take him to a small area in the yard (fenced) and just clip on the leash and let him drag it around and play ball, give treats, etc. with it on.

The gently hold the leash and continue to give treats. Keep shortening it till he feels the restraint. Then give him a sit command and reward him.

Most puppies freak out the first time they get leashes on cause they are all of a sudden restraint from doing/going where they want.
