Separation anxiety or something else?

I posted this on a lab forum, but I'm asking for help here too!

Bo (5 1/2 month old lab/Dane *we think*mix) does fine in the crate, when we are home or not. No separation issues so far *fingers crossed*.

Here's the thing- if I'm holding the leash and hand it to someone, even someone he knows (my husband) he freaks out and barks and lunges until I get back. Last night at the park I couldn't walk him because of my hurt foot, so my husband's cousin (whom he sees at least once a week) tried to walk him. He drug her back to me, barking the whole time- they didn't get more than a few yards away from me. One time, we were all outside, and my hubby and kids went to the mailbox while Bo and I stayed in the back yard (on leash)- he barked after them like crazy- that's the only time he's done it about anyone but me.

Also, he has gotten clingy to me, but not necessarily in a good way. When I hurt my ankle, my best friend (whom he loves) took him out to pee, petted him, and he was fine. I was on the couch and when she got close to look at my foot and leaned in, he freaked out and jumped on me and covered me with his body, giving her "back off" looks. He never growled or snapped but he was clearly afraid of something.

Is this something I can work on, or do I need to contact a behaviorist? We are in basic puppy obedience classes and I will ask the trainer next week, I was just wanting opinions on here as well. Thanks in advance!

Re: Separation anxiety or something else?

For now, the world is pretty small and it's almost all you. As he gets older, the world expands, he gains confidence and he learns that being alone is OK.
In the meantime you can have your husband and others do some of the feeding, grooming, walking, playing and working on basic obedience with him.
