Need Help With Licking Habit

Hello, I have a little problem with my Chihuahua, Nina.

She is a super sweet dog, and she licks me or anyone, including my Collie, Bo, all of the time! She will lick hands, arms, faces, etc, and it is quite gross.

I tried to train her to stop doing it by telling her "No" every time, but she doesn't really care, and now about a year has gone by with saying "No", and she still does it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I believe that she is doing it out of boredom and enjoying the yummy taste for salt.

She doesn't seem bored at all, she actually seems very happy, and I play with her all of the time. Maybe she does it because she is so sweet? She loves everyone & everything! Lol.

It is just pretty gross and I would really like her to stop.

Talking Re: Need Help With Licking Habit

Sometimes we dog owners can "over use" words with our fur babies. If it has been over a year of saying "NO" to her for unwanted licking then the word has been over used.

I'd suggest you try a different word or sound, and put her down or turn your back to her every time she licks you. I use "enough" for things I want Keira to stop doing like barking or licking and the sound that I use to show my displeasure with her is "a..a..i..t" but all together but drawn out (kinda hard to spell out the sound) It's a sound that she doesn't hear anywhere else.

You have to show your dog who's boss and incontrol. It should not be her!

Re: Need Help With Licking Habit

When she is licking you, get up and leave the room. When she is not licking you, pet her. A clicker would be helpful in catching the moment when she stops, but a praise word (ie: Good) would work too. Basically the second she stops licking click or say good and pet her.
