Teaching a small dog to jump in your arms

So I've been wondering about this for a while. Is it okay to teach a small dog to jump in your arms? It's a cute thing to teach them, especially if they're in your arms a lot, but I'm afraid that this will encourage unwanted jumping. Will it?

Re: Teaching a small dog to jump in your arms

Yes it will. Unless its okay with you for the dogs to jump on you then don't encourage it. See the biggest mistake people with dogs that jump on others make is that they encourage it at a small age. And then for some crazy and unexpected reason owners seem to believe that the dog should know that as it grows older (and possible alot heavier) it should stop jumping on people. But thats not the case, a dog will keep jumping on someone eventhough its bigger because to him/her it was ok to do it younger so its okay to do it now.

So unless that you want the pooch to jump on you at anytime during its lifetime, then I would suggest that you don't teach it to jump on you.

Hope that helps!

I considered teaching my dog this "trick" after a few bad encounters with other dogs where I couldn't grab him to pick him up and rescue him from other peoples' stupidity... but now that I'm pregnant I'm glad I didn't. If I was holding something (like a baby!) I wouldn't want him unexpectedly trying to jump on me.

I don't see why it would be so bad...If taught correctly, I would think you'd be able to teach her the specific act of jumping into your arms as opposed to jumping all over you...But that's just me. I've seen Border Collies trained to do this, and they don't jump up on people. Only when they're given the command. *shrug* Maybe it's different with smaller dogs. I'm certainly no expert.

I don't think it would be a bad thing to teach, as long as it's taught to be done only on command, and that any other jumping is not allowed.

Don't think it's a bad thing to teach, as long as you cue it properly.
