Help W/ Aggressive Male

Alright here is the story. I have a 1 yr male German Shepherd. He is really a great dog. He has been to obedience classes and is somewhat great on a leash and with commands, we are still working though.

The problem is when out walking on leash, when he sees another dog, he goes insane. He starts barking, pulling, and jumping. Sometimes I can ge him to sit or lay down, but he continues to bark out of control. It is so bad that the other dog's owners, or bystanders, tend to get afraid of him. I don't think he is at the point of attacking the dog or owner, but it is like he gets excited and wants to play or is interested in the other party.

A little history on the fella is that he is a parvo survivor and missed a little socialization when he was a puppy due to this. In the past few months it is my fault that he hasn't been very socialized. He is the second dog of the house, with the first being an 8 yr old female Siberian Husky. The two of them get along great, with the common fight now and then.

Any suggestions to getting this pup less aggressive. We have started a little socialization with him, but so far nothing new is coming of this. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Re: Help W/ Aggressive Male

You're getting too close to the other dogs. You need to stop walking at the very first emotional sign from him which might be a block away. The 1st sign is usually a very focused, intent look. That's the point where you want to start working on calmness and attention on you instead of the other dog. From there, you take in stages..trying to move a little closer each time without a reaction. If the other owner/dog move toward you, walk away.
This will take time so, don't rush it...the attention on you instead of the distraction is very important.
