Over Hyper Black Lab

Hi,

I have a Black Lab that is just too hyper. He is almost 1 yr 5 monthes old now and he is more hyper now than he was when he was a puppy. He also jumps on anyone that comes near him.I have raised 5 other dogs(2 black labs)before and have never had this problem. Are there any things I can try to help this problem? Is it too late to take him to training classes?Any help is appreciated Thanks,

IMO, it is never too late for training!

labs have a looot of energy. Exercise- ball, long walks, frisbee will do wonders.

My lab pup gets NO attention from anyone until he has all 4 paws on the floor. We also don't acknowledge him when we first come home.

It is never too late for training classes. Take him now and work on your training at home every day, several short sessions a day. Obedience work, as well as exercise outside of the yard, are both key to helping a dog find what it is supposed to do and shed that extra energy. Search the forum for NILIF (nothing in life is free) for a real good place to start.

Approximately 4 out of every 10 dogs I train are Labs, They built a dog to break 100 yards of ice to fetch a duck. Most people do not use them for that purpose, they are purchased as pets. These dogs have a lot of drive and energy. Some more than others. As far as age is concerned there is no concern just start training.

It's never too late to start training.

I have a black Lab X who can get really hyper at times and jumps. What I do is just completely ignore her, with my arms crossed over my chest and looking up at the ceiling. I don't talk to her or touch her. She usually calms down within seconds.

How are you currently trying to teach him not to jump?

What would you rather he do?

Have you put the rather on cue?

What behaviors does he know, and how well does he know them?

Re: Over Hyper Black Lab

Never too late. I just took an 8 year old newcomer to our house to obedience training.

My experience with labs is the same stated above...very high energy, must be exercised daily. My personal experience is that they start to settle a bit around 3 years old.

Re: Over Hyper Black Lab

What is your schedule for his daily activities? Are you walking and playing with him regularly and daily? Has your life changed since you had owned your previous labs?

As the other posters have said, labs require quite a bit of attention and exercise. I ask the above questions because as we go through life, our situations certainly change (jobs, kids, etc.) that prevent us from spending as much time as we normally would with our pets.
