Re: What DOESN'T work

I have seen several service dogs force fetched by ear pinching methods. It is justified by the trainers saying "picking up the recipients keys when they are wheel chair bound or worse, laying in a snow bank is not optional."
For the average Joe, there are other ways to teach a dog to fetch successfully.

Re: What DOESN'T work

Throwing a dog in a crate and slamming the door when they have done something wrong.

I was actually in a training class and while practicing a 3 minute seperation my GSD growled at another dog "in her space" she didnt snap, didnt even lunge forward just let out a little growl and showed her teeth but DID NOT snap or bite.

The trainer yelled "NO!" (i heard from the other side of the building) put her in a crate slammed the door and then walked off. I heard about this from other people and another trainer who watched this happen.

Im pretty sure its crate training 101 not to use it as punishment.

If im ever in a position where I need to put my dog in the crate say after she tears something up i dont yell at her. I act all cheery and say lets go take a nap and that is her queue to go in her crate (which she likes, by the way)

in any case, yeah no using the crate as punishment.

Jumping up equals doimance. One of the most rediculous things I hear and yet I hear it over and over.

I have actually seen one of my teachers at school do this. It made me very sad to see

Did anyone say alpha rolling yet (sorry I dont remember if anyone did)?

I saw someone at the park grab their dog for jumping on another dog and throwing him to the ground and GROWLED at the dog! The dog was happy for human contact it seemed and the guy was forcing the dog on his back and growling at him, all the while the dog was wagging his tail.

Re: What DOESN'T work

I actually saw this the other day at the beach. To get a puppy to swim: First pull and drag it by its collar to the beach water and incoming waves. When it doesnt want to walk over and rolls on its back, continue dragging it to the water... a little choking and gagging is fine. Then when that isnt working fast enough for you, pick the pup up by the scruff of the neck- the wrong way- and throw it into the water, making it swim all the way back to shore- scared sh*tless. Repeat until puppy runs off into the dunes, trying to get away from your stupid A$$.

This was at the beach about 4 weeks ago... I couldnt believe it, I was too far away to say anything about it, and even then I might have been beat up! It was a family affair... each kid had a turn after the father... and each kid ran after the pup screaming for it to get back here. It was a Golden Retriever pup. I bet he's really going to LOVE bath time!

Actually, I allow dogs after a training session to jump up on me. I use it as a pressure release for the dog.

I guess it's possible to teach a water dog like a golden to hate the water if you work at it.

This thread was meant to be fun, and maybe informative, but I could see how it could become depressing.

Re: What DOESN'T work

I used to have a neighbor with a noisy beagle (go figure!) who obviously had a vast vocabulary and an understanding of math, because the owner would aways yell at him, "How many times have I told you to be quiet!!!???!!!"

I always wished I could throw my voice and say, "About two dozen times, today."

But then the poor dog would've gotten in trouble for mouthing off.

Re: What DOESN'T work

Dogs are spiteful.
Dogs feel guilty.
Dogs need to be dominated.

Sorry, those are the only ones I can think of at the moment...

Re: What DOESN'T work

Don't....pop it on the nose.

Don't......If it bites/nips you (I heard this one from a trainer regarding puppy nipping), grab its nose (fingers in the mouth and thumb on top) and squeeze until puppy yelps, then say "NO!"

NEVER.....punish for returning to you after it has run away!!! (The dog thinks you are punishing it for returning)

I just hope people who actually NEED this info read the posts and not just us! LOL

Re: What DOESN'T work

On the health related front...

"Health tested? Sure, she's been to the vet before I bread her."

"My dog bites me. His distemperment shot must be due."

"I don't need to have a stool sample checked. I look at his poo myself." (I'd love to have that kind of superhero vision myself!)

(Upon telling a client we haven't seen in over 12 years that our schedule is full and maybe the should contact their regular vet.) "You guys ARE my regular vet!"

"The pet store said my 7 week old puppy already HAD all her shots. What do I need more for?!" (Often, the same people pay between $500 and $1500 for their pup, on a credit card, then complain about the cost of vaccinations, fecal exams, dewormers, etc.)

Re: What DOESN'T work

Myths:

"Don't rub a dog's belly as it will make them roll over and cower."

"When you hit a dog, hit UP under the jaw so he won't be afraid of your hand coming down and end up cowering" (it never occured to anyone that hitting the dog PERIOD might be ther reason for Cowering)

"Never feed a dog raw meat, it will make them vicious."

"The dog chewed your XXXX (insert article of clothing) up to spite you."

At a public event or function with lot os people, dogs and kids around, the dog is issued a command and does not obey, so owner hits the dog saying, "The dog KNOWS <<insert command>>>. He does it at home. He is just being disobedient." (dogs don't know because they don't generalize the command from home to the new situation).

"Spading (sic) a female dog makes her fat."

Assumptions that don't work:

"My dog would NEVER bite"

"My dog knows to never go in the (street, road, hiway, etc.)."

"My dog would never chase <<insert livestock name or wild life>>"

even though they will be able to recoup the cost of the dog since it obviously a high quality dog because of what they paid. Later they will breed it to the neighbors dog to make up the money lost at purchase.

Re: What DOESN'T work

Anybody heard the (No dog will ever bite me)

This is usually preceeded by "I have a way with animals."

And after all that is said, the next image is a close up of the dog and the person with an outstretched hand followed quickly by the dog with said hand 1/2 way down the dog's throat with the sound bite of human screams and dog growling...
