New to forums

Hello my name is Julian. I own a year old boxer. His name is Nacho. He is currently attending beginner classes at Petsmart. However, I have been teaching him prior for a solid year on loosh leash, sit, down, stay (sit and down). He is a great dog. He has his quirks. in public he tends to get a little rowdy but we are currently working on that with the help of a pronged pinch. We are also working on come.

Just wanted to say hello and i'll post pictures of Nacho later. Reason for joining was maybe getting some help with Heel, Come and Stay (with distractions). Maybe getting some feedback as to how to do that.

Welcome Julian! Nacho is a good looking dog! We have a Boxer, too, and a Boxer mix. They're wonderful dogs.

Awww!! What a cute baby!! My Chewie went to PetSmart beginner training and I want to bring him to the next level. They did a good job but the training it VERY basic. Chewie did learn "leave it" though!! (He already knew "sit" and "stay" and I never had a problem with him pulling on the leash since he's an 11-12 pound dog!!)

i will say this i've looked at alot of pictures of boxers and he is one of a kind as far as looks.

That's good. I'll bet you just need more work on proofing those behaviors you mentioned. Build on distance and distractions slowly. Remember to never call your dog to you unless you can reinforce it.

As far as Stay goes, I don't use it anymore. If I say Sit (Down, etc.) I train my dog to follow through until I give another cue or my release word ("Break!"). If you train for duration, then train with distractions you won't need Stay.

yeah, he stays fine. but you're right we haven't done distractions yet with any of those commands. i did introduce some distraction a few days ago. i had him in a down position and was stomping around. at first he was wanting to get up and play but after awhile and a few corrections he didn't budge. was quite funny. looked at me like i was crazy walking around him stomping at him.

Out of curiosity, what do you do to correct him?

I like to think of adding duration or distractions as asking a question of my dogs. I try to set my dogs up for success by not asking too much of them too soon, but when I do the dog will let me know and I won't have to give more than a simple no reward marker and ask again, but with an easier answer. In this way I avoid having to give physical or verbal corrections which can have a negative impact on the relationship the dogs and I share.

i use the pronged choker. i never abuse it. to be honest he responds better to the clicker if anything else. if i do correct him with the choker its very quick and never hard. mostly just to get his attention.

i know some view it as being negative but he does quite welll with both pronged choker and clicker.

as of right now he is just doing duration stays. some sessions with distractions but mostly w/out.
