No Progress with Potty

When we got Oskar (hes 4.5 months now) he was already paper trained. We just were able to get a nice crate, which he is still getting use to... we leave it open, we don't close him in it yet because he is still not comfortable with it.

Anyway, we are trying to make the transition to go outside. He was going #2 outside for a week (even before we got the crate) but now he only goes on the paper again.
Should I take the paper away completely? Won't he just potty in the same spot?

The thing about paper training that was really working for us is that he has half the house to himself. It is puppy proofed and he fairly well behaved (even though hes in demon phase right now). So would I have to lock him in the crate until he has to go? My studio/office is part of his half of the house. I'm in it most the time and keep an eye on him. So hes out and near me almost all of the day that I'm home.

So the problem is crate training him with what he is already use to, potty wise and environment wise. I'm stuck. Please give me suggestions.

Re: No Progress with Potty

First, bait the area you want him to go to outside with some of the soiled papers from inside. Dogs are all about smell so you want him to smell his (or another dog's) urine to get the idea.

Second, IMO, I would remove the papers if you want him to strictly go outside. I would tether him to you with a leash when you are home so that he cannot wander out of your sight. Be sure to keep his feedings on a schedule as it helps to form a predictable elimination pattern. Then just be sure to take him outside either every 2 hours or when you have observed (since you kinda already know when he uses the newspapers) that he would most likely be successful in producing outside. Remember PRAISE and food rewards when there is a success.

I think the problem that folks get into with paper training is that you have now taught the dog that it's ok to eliminate inside the house. And it's just a pup who's trying to learn everything all at once. Then, just when that pup thinks he has the routine down, the owner wants the dog to learn to go outside to do business. It's just too confusing for most pups.

We have several threads going on the board around here with people who obtained tiny puppies in the midst of winter (too cold) or now their dog has grown so large that it is no longer feasible (odor/ flooding the kitchen) to continue with indoor pottying. There have been some good posts in their threads as well that you might want to check out.

Re: No Progress with Potty

I can't bait the hallway to outside.. I live in an apartment complex and my neighbors would be mightly unhappy stepping in soiled papers, haha. Maybe I can try bringing soiled papers outside or something...

I know I'm confusing him, but he is so smart. I think if he just goes once outside (#1) everything will go a little smoother. I just gotta get him to go that one time so I can praise praise praise.

When we are out, he'll act like he has to go but just waits until we are back inside. Wish the weather was a little warmer, I'd just sit in the park all day until he couldn't hold it anymore.

I'll read around. More suggestions welcome, or even stories of what you did with your dog from a similar situation.
