What is the best way to train?

I've heard Huskies are the more stubborn of the breeds.
Mine knows how to sit, but the previous owner taught him nothing?
What is the best way to get him to Lay, Stay etc.?

Have you considered signing up for training classes?

In order to train any dog you need to find out what motivates him. Then you can use those things to teach him. My dogs are very food motivated so that is usually what I start out with but some other dogs might be better motivated by toys. Find something your dog is willing to work for.

My first dog was a husky mix (with coyote or something... hehe, j/k, I think she is mixed with Malamute), and she is VERY stubborn. Sometimes she is completely oblivious to me, or at least she pretends that I'm not there. I taught her sit, down, speak and shake a paw very easily. I taught her stay, heel and come when she was young, and I did puppy agility with her as well. She knows some words too, like, "Go see Daddy", "Cinnamon" (my parents dog), "Walkies", "Get your leash" and "Dog Park" . Huskies, in my opinion (I have three, but they are all mixed) are stubborn, but incredibly smart dogs. They are a bit self serving, but also very caring. Mine love food. I tried toys, but they'd just run away and play together... I made home made bacon and cheese cookies and cut them up into tiny pieces before baking them. Those worked great for training because they had a strong smell, and the dogs were very attracted to the odour =^.^=

A training class. but not PetsMart type would be very good. The main things to remember is to be consistent, reward good behavior and correct bad. In training there are 3 phases: (1) learning, when the dog does not yet know the command, (2) proofing, and (3) adding distractions. All three must be done in multiple locations before the dog will generalize it. For example, just because the dog knows sit in the livingroom without distractions doesn't mean he knows it in the front yard with minimal distractions or at the park with more distractions. You don't correct during the learning phase, those are started during proofing and when adding distractions.

Positive reenforcement ALL THE WAY! If I can train a rescued bulldog who had NO manners you can train your huskie! I LOVE "The Complete Idiots Guide to Positive Dog Training" . You might also look into getting "Really Reliable Recall" by Leslie Nielson and "Calming Signals" by Turid Rugass to learn to read your dog.
