| What is the difference between.. A halti and a gentle lead?
Halti:
Gentle Leader:
I am trying to figure out which will work better to control Chance &
Kody on walks- regular collars and leads aren't doing the trick. Which is better? Is there a difference? |

| Re: What is the difference between.. They're the same principle - slightly different design. I used a Gentle Leader on Reno when he was young and I liked it.
I think the GL is slightly more expensive. Worth it though. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. It seems to me one doesn't adjust if the dog pulls it just stays tight and one adjusts to tighten if they pull. Not sure which would work better for which dog. I'd like to have them though, and theyre 9.99 and 10.49 on petedge.com so either one would work. In your opinion the gentle leader would work better? |

| Re: What is the difference between.. The Gentle Leader is the one I used and I liked it. Once it's on and fit to the dog's face it doesn't change.
When I worked in a pet supply store we sold Haltis and I never really could get to like them - not sure why - maybe too much 'hardware' on them. Always felt it would be too uncomfortable for the dogs. That's just me though.
For the price you found them you can't go wrong with one of each to try. When I got the Gentle Leader it was brand new to the market and about
$20. I got it through Tufts University when I took Reno there for an evaluation. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. Yeah this site is dirt cheap. i buy my collars for like 2 bucks on here too. Its called petedge.com. they supply pet stores. If your GSD did well on the halti, I will get haltis. I wonder how it will do on a beagles snout. I'm sure he will be fine as the halti is SHOWN on a beagle! lol. Thanks for the input, was waiting for a reply before I submitted my order! I am also getting chance a no jump harness for when we're at the dog park at my apts- see my thread titles- || <- this close to being a horrific morning |

| Re: What is the difference between.. no, sorry i confused myself!! The gentle leader is what you used, got it. even though the halti is shown on a beagle, I;m sure the GL will work just as good. Im the one that confused that one, not you! haha- its been a long day! |

do your dogs bark at strangers or other dogs a lot? chance wasnt socialized bc he had parvo, so im reluctant to introduce him |

| Re: What is the difference between.. Yes, they do bark.. they are my 'early warning system'.
I have windows that face the street. Buck loves to sit and watch out the window for passersby whether human or dogs so he can go into his 'dog from hell' routine. Don't tell him I told you but he's really a big fat wuss!!! Chazz is just a copycat. Whatever Buck does he thinks he can do better.
Once I tell them 'okay' they know I have the situation under control and they will stop barking and go find something else to do.
When we're at the field... they could care less about other people or dogs. Once in a while there's people at the field when we get there so I just go to the other side. The boys don't pay any attention to them.
Even though Chance wasn't socialized as a pup, it's not too late to start now. Some one on one time in different situations might go a long way toward helping. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. I used the gentle leader with my st. bernard. LOVED IT, as well . It worked really well for her, and I couldn't have been more happy. My sister also used one for her little sheltie, and it worked just as good.
Once you have it sized for the individual dog, you just slip it on and go. |

Please read directions, and follow them; you can do serious damage to your dog if you use leash corrections when wearing a head collar. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. With the head collars it's very important you get the right size, and that its adjusted correctly on the head, otherwise it can ride up and rub on their eyes. Also do not let the dog scratch at it, (which is common when they first are getting used to it) they can accidently scratch their eyes with their paws. Also its a gentle pull and release for correction. You do not want to do any jerking as it could cause damage to their neck. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. Jennifer, I was scouting around a pet store for my friend's pulling Basenji-mix - apparently, a beagle is a Halti size 2, if that means anything. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. Hey thanks!
Aussiefan- your advice is very to the point and makes perfect sense. Thank you so much for replying to my questions.
Rosemaryninja- Kody doesn't have the "thick" beagle head and face that most beagles do. But I will try the size two! Thanks! |

| Re: What is the difference between.. As Aussie said, it seemed to me that the gentle leader was pretty much 'self correcting'. What I mean by that is if my St. Bernard walked forward to try and pull...I didn't do much but keep hold of the leash. As she felt the resistance from the leader she came back, and stopped pulling. By stepping back, she felt it give...and sought the reward. If she tried pulling again, pressure, when she stopped pulling, it released..her reward. Hope that makes sense.
She figured it out pretty quickly, and she ended up walking right beside you on a slack leash. She just decided no point in trying to pull. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. Jennifer, thanks for posting this question! We were just talking about this at work this morning (the difference between the two) and I had no idea. One of my coworkers used the gentle leader for her lab and said it was like walking a totally different dog. |

| Re: What is the difference between.. You should never, ever, ever give ANY type of leash correction on a head halter. If the dog self-corrects, that's not ideal but it's managable- but you should NOT be deliberately correcting, even gently, on a head halter. |
