Question New Puppy

Ok, so here is the problem. I just got a new puppy. I've also have an older dog. The puppy is a male and the older dog is a female (Sadie). Well the puppy keeps trying to nurse off of Sadie and he is hurting her, he keeps trying to nurse from her private area. I give him milk, but he still wants to nurse from her. Any advice on how to stop this?

Re: New Puppy

How old is this puppy? Was he completely weaned from his mother?

Re: New Puppy

Hi, I am unsure, my grandmother found the puppy, she asked everyone in the neighborhood is if was theirs, but no one claimed him, so she gave him to me last night. We think he is about 6 weeks old. I haven't taken him to the vet yet, so I dont know for sure.

Re: New Puppy

Since he was found as a stray and could be carrying many unwanted diseases and parasites I would keep the pup isolated from other animals until you get a vet check done.

Re: New Puppy

Coming from being a vet's assistant. Make sure you're giving puppy milk.. sold at petsmart.. or wet puppy food. he's only 6 weeks. he's pretty young. make sure he's going to the bathroom regularly.. i.e. you feed him 3 times, he should poop 3 times.. Make sure gums are wet and pink, not white light pink, or tacky. pull up the skin slightly to make sure that he is hydrated. The fur should snap back to normal before you pulled it.any other questions! Just ask!!! Good luck

Re: New Puppy

Thanks for everyone's input. I was gonna give him a try for a week to see if he got along good with Sadie and its going good. He's pretty much stopped nursing from Sadie since he sees me when I take the milk from the fridge and pour it in his bowl. I have an appointment next week for his first puppy check up. Thanks again!!
