Scratches to go outside, but then runs away

We are new dog owners. Completely new. We usually have no idea of what to do next. For sit, stay, come, etc., we at least have our leash training sessions and we have an idea. But one of our dogs suddenly has the habit of needing to go out to take care of business and standing by the door. But as we approach to let him out, he sneaks/backs away and hides under the couch or hides in his crate. The habit came on suddenly. The only way we can get him to go out is when he's really been holdling it for a long time (sometimes he goes inside then) or to throw a tiny treat outside (which seems inherently wrong to me somehow). He's a Papillion - a breed I know nothing about, except that I'd heard they're hard to train.
Any technique or training imagery or opinons on this odd behaviour would really help as we learn how to live together with the dog (Reilly).

Re: Scratches to go outside, but then runs away

Hi Will.. it sounds like something has scared the dog, something outside or something happened by the door to scare him.

I think the first thing I would try in that situation is to show the dog that everything is ok by the door and outside.

Go outside and call to your dog, have a treat handy and when the dog comes out to you, give him a treat. Praise him like crazy and stay outside with him until he does his business. Then give him another treat and praise him again.

The more praise he gets for going out, he'll realize that its a good thing and there is nothing to be scared of.

HTH,
Amber

Hi, Amber,

Thank you very much for your insight! I bet you are right! I am always worried about the sliding door and whether one of us may have closed the door too quickly on his tail or leg! There are four of us here and I can't always see what's going on. We'll do just what you recommended.
Thank you again!
Will

No problem Will Yes definitely tell everyone to be careful of that door. That very same thing happened with my parents collie. My older sister accdientally did it (shes a vet tech) and Misty had to have a cast on her tail. It cut her down to the bone the poor thing

welcome to the site!

My puppy does the EXACT same thing, and he does it whenever I go to the door, or when I grab his harness to take him for a walk. all I do is step outside and he knows its ok (i guess?) or just start walking and he will continue... show him you'll protect him from all the evil things :-)
