Red face smart lil pup

I've got a 13 week old chocolate Lab and we're currently working on housebreaking. Ive posted on here about his crate training, but I wanted to ask about a technique I read about for housebreaking. I was wondering how effective you guys might find the "bell by the door" trick with your dogs? My little man hasnt quite learned yet that by going to the door he can let me know hes needs to go outside. I can usually catch the signs of needing to potty pretty quickly and we still take him out about every 3 hours and he hasnt had any accidents recently. His crate training is going well, and he is able to stay in his crate all night (about 7 hours) without any accidents.
What would be the best way to go about training him with the bell?
He is smart as a whip. He knew how to fetch the first time we threw the ball (he brought it right back), he learned sit within the first week, knows lay down and stay, and is now learning to catch a frisbee (which he has already done about a handful of times).
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: smart lil pup

There have been lots of threads on this recently so look around on the forum. Some dogs learn to do this, others never do.
