Thread inspired by ThxForNothing. I taught Elsa how to stand, probably, through unconventional means, by sticking my right foot or hand underneath her rear and lifting it up after I said "stand", followed by treat and praise. She learned it as a verbal cue in about two days. But I was wondering how everyone else approached this conundrum?

I used the same method actually. Shippo likes to sit down all the time, and it's hard to brush him when he's sitting (he's so short anyway!). Also, I can take pictures of his development when he's standing. >^_^<

Although this is a bit off the subject. I really never thought much about stand. When mine stand they are usually in the way of TV, other people in the room, etc!
Jake took Moose to his OB class yesterday. They have to down-stay for 3+ minutes. Do they take points off if the dog starts to snore??????
Down stay is not a problem. but maybe we need to look into STAND!!!

the "monks" use basically what you guys said...just that instead of a hand they use a second leash around the dog's belly.

Awh! I'm so glad I inspired further training. *yay*

I've seen some people use 4 little blocks that arn't very high off the ground, but up enough to where the dog can tell the difference, ya know? I'm not sure how they do the actual training part, but i'm guessing they just place them there, and say "Stand" (praise em, repeat).

But yeah, if I was training it.. i'd do it the same way you did. or with a leash wrapped around the belly so I could ask 'em to stand as I gently pulled em up.
