| Basic Crate Training Many people do not either know what crate training is or they dont know how to use them properly. I will explain the basic uses and rules.
I have gotten this info straight from petsmart
What is Crate Training?
Crate training is simply puting a dog in a crate when it is bed time. You can also put you dog in the crate for less then a hour. Its very simple but theres a ton of rules.
Rules and uses:
1. My main rule tha I cant stand people not doing is the TCINFPOFN rule which means:
The
Crate
Is
NOT
For
Punishment
Only
For
Nightime
I know so many people who dont follow that rule.
2. Many trainers say to not respond if the dogs yelps in the crate. If it starts to yelp, immediatly take it to go do its business immidietly.
3. Do not use the crate if you are tired of playing with your dog
4. And EXPECIALY, do not put the dog in there to sleep during the day
Extra Info:
Always keep a crate bed and a toy in there. Do not put there food in there. Put a hanging water dispenser in the crate but do nont put a regular bowl in there.
I hope I covered all of the basics of crate training
Here are other perspectives of crate training that you might find more suitable for your dog:
All4thedogs recamends:
1-Crate training is only for night time. I very much disagree with this. Especially when potty training. Puppies should be in their crate anytime the owner can not watch them. The puppy will need a break from the crate every hour or so, to play, run around, and potty. I also crate my dogs when Im not home (before they are reliable to leave free in the house)
2-Having a crate pad and water in the crate. I disagree with this UNTIL the dog is housetrained. Pads, blankets, towels encourage dogs to potty in their crate, as its easy to hide, and lay down anyway. It also encourages chewing on their bed. I also do NOT provide water in the crate. First of all its often spilled, and leaves a mess, second, it again encourages the puppy to potty in the crate.

| I agree crate training is very important, but I disagree with many of your points.

Crate training is wonderful if done correctly. It is not for punishment, this is your dogs den, and most dogs learn to love their crate. Many will sleep in there even if not told to. Both of my dogs are crate trained, and neither minds being crated. |

| I have to agree with Redyre. For the record, Petsmart is wrong in a lot of their training advice. It is totally fine to crate the dog/puppy when you cannot supervise it, and it is a wonderful tool for potty training as well.
I used the crate with my corgi at night and during the day when he couldn't be supervised (Put a few toys like a Kong in there), and he is still fed in his crate. |

| I agree with Redyre and Cheetah. PetsMart is fine for buying supplies but not for training advice or classes. A crate for a puppy is like using a playpen for a toddler. It keeps them safe when you can't watch them 110% of the time. |

| Eeek as someone who used to work for PetsMart, I'm very much dismayed by their crate training advice given (this is NOT what the trainers taught when I was there....it was very much what Redyre and all4thedogs already said so no need to repeat). |

I think we'll be fine there though, because I never take a single point of view on anything. I like to research several opinions on almost anything I'm doing and decide for myself. |
