My dog has an obsession... o.o

Well I've been training my dog lately more than usual. (I'm ashamed to admit i never did it earlier but anyway back on topic) My dog seems to have an obsession with food. Not just likes it a lot but an obsession. Whenever i try to give her a treat she doesn't listen to any command i give her... Anyone know how to break that kind of habit?

You should be in 7th heaven! That's exactly what you want. The problem that needs to be fixed is that she has never learned that she has to DO something to earn the treat. That's a key statement....if you've been giving her treats for no reason you need to stop. No sit, no treat...no down, no treat. Do not taunt her with the treat by showing it to her or waving it around...it's not a bribe. You can put it in your pocket if you wish...she knows you have it!

Search the forum for doggie zen. This is a great exercise that helps with grabbing food out of hands and all sorts of things. It's fun to do and tires your dog out while you get to sit down. Once you have that down, it may help you.

Well yes i know it's good she likes food but the problem is if there is any food out... in the kitchen on the counter. If she even smells the slightest bit of food she gets obsessive and starts sniffing and doesnt stop. She doesnt listen to any command if there is food around. But i'll look at that zen thing. Thanks. :]

I have a seriously food driven pup too; the key to getting her to focus on you is to take a treat, and wait for her to make eye contact with you; call her name, ask her to 'watch me', use a little squeaker, anything, to get her to make even the slightest eye contact. When she does, immediately reward her effort; help her to learn that treats will only be given if she is looking TO you for them. As you are learning, if a dog is not looking at you, he is not listening to you either. Put her on a lead if necessary; in fact I would recommend it, mainly so she can't walk away from you; don't hold her close, just have it on so she can't walk away. Work on "watch me" and once you get that down everything else will be easy, but she has to learn that in order to recieve anything she has to pay attention to you.
