Bell training

I have been trying to bell train my dogs to go outside for a month. They just don't get it. Does anyone have any suggestions I could try?

Re: Bell training

We hung the bell next to the door and rang it every time before we went outside. One day, it just clicked.... then he started ringing the bell ALL the time. So yesterday after he broke the bell off of the string, I decided I would not be fixing it

I liked it in the beginning when he was younger - I just felt like it was a sort of back up in case I didn't think it was time for him to go and he couldn't hold it or something. But according to the experts, you shouldn't let them tell you when they need to go out, they should be going out when you tell them it's time. But now that he's 5 1/2 months I feel like he can hold it, so I won't be replacing the broken bell. Like I said, he rang it ALL the time.

Anyway, sorry - I tend to be long winded at times

Re: Bell training

I've had dogs all my life. Some dogs ring bells and some never do. I have a dog right now who spins around on the rug by the door when she has to go out. Another one will come over and paw at my knee ("excuse me!") when she has to go out. And the third one just manages to go when everyone else needs to go out.
